We've had one of the original Dysons (DC01) for years. Just replace the filters on a regular basis and a bit of a service now and then.

By service - the pathway in the base near the brush can clog up effectively reducing suction to zero. Takes all of 5 mins and your back to like new. I suspect with dog hairs and similar that's what's happened to the OP's machine.

I suspect most Dysons that end up at the local tip for the same reason and moving slowly to a throwaway society, people can't be bothered getting them fixed & just buy a new one.

I think dysons are great!

I've "rescued" a few from the tip and generally all they needed was the filters washing out, I don't think some folks realise there is a filter in them and of course no one reads instruction manuals

& sometimes crap needs untangling from the brushes.

I have one extracting fine dust from my table saw & one on the lathe - cost me zilch.

The one in the house we did buy is about 5 years old - I give it a 20 minute go over about 3 times a year & it works fine.

I know I'm a bit wierd but I rather like servicing vacum cleaners
Look after serveral owned by various family members.

Same here Lurker, most vacuum cleaners suffer from motor brush wear allied to most ladies being unable to recognise the signs of imminent brush failure. Also filter cleaning seems to be beyond them I'm afraid.
One Dyson I dealt with had virtually no suction at all, till the filters were cleaned.

Kirby are still going.

I used one a year or so ago at a customer's house. They are fantastic bits of kit - all steel construction and very heavy, but very easy to push around due the quality of the bearings. The carpet is literally sucked off the floor as you use it.

Unfortunately, the ridiculous price and Kirby's wide boy high pressure door-to-door sales methods put nearly everyone off. If only they could embrace ethical trading practices and get the prices down via higher levels of sales and production they would have become the ubiquitous brand across the world, rather than a strange-looking curiosity.

Meanwhile, I used a Sebo machine on Friday while fitting some furniture at a client's house. I'd never heard of them before reading this thread but have to say I agree with everything that has been said.

Excellent. That's Mrs Naylor's birthday present sorted out!

Brad

If I bought Mrs Lurker a household appliance for her birthday, I can be pretty sure I'd end up with a very high pitched voice

And a 'new biological function' that would get you a job with Billy Smarts

( I have mischievously wrapped a 'proper' present up in a Kenwood Food Blender box once... and the Ayatollah went ape-sh*t when she saw it ).

It was worth it for the laugh, like ....
but I wouldn't have fancied my chances if there was a blender in it
