I have to visit China for work, and with flight times, have a spare day in Hong Kong before a colleague arrives.

Any suggestions for must see or must do activities whilst I am there?

Just a day, not a lot of time to sort your location out.

Have a ride out to Stanley Market on the bus.
Go up the escalators on the peak in the afternoon (they come down in the mornings) to see the views and eat at the peak restaurant.
Take the star Ferry to Kowloon just for the hell of it.

I could not have said it better myself.

excellent. I will do that then. Unfortunately it is not a lot of time, but I may see a token few things.

Was there last week - amazing place. As others have said, a day's not a lot of time, but the open-topped bus ride is a worthwhile way of spending 90 minutes. We took a cab up the peak, and rode the funicular down; long, long queues to get the funicular up, at all times of day. If you have time then afternoon tea at the Peninsular in Kowloon is very nice, but may be a bit weird if you're on your own... Or a drink at the bar of Felix (Peninsular again) has great views across the island. Or the Ozone bar in the Ritz-Carlton (a bit further out in the ICC at Unit Square above Kowloon station) on 118th floor - makes the island look like Legoland.

The Ladies Market in Mongkok (Kowloon) is worth a visit if you're after 'copy watch, copy handbag' - or a host of other knock-off odds and ends.

+1 for the Star Ferry, and take a ride on the underground if you can - spotlessly clean, incredibly efficient and dirt cheap - and really good air conditioning! Taxis are also very cheap, though there's an extraordinary amount of building work going on there so traffic's pretty bad - though there's plenty to stare at out of the window.

Have fun & enjoy - not jealous at all :(

Cheers Pete

If you are there after dark then a trip to the peak in the evening is worth it to see the lights.
Give yourself plenty of time in airport before your flight, I came so close to missing a flight due to seriously underestimating how big it is.

Don't know how long you are in mainland China or if you are coming back out via Hong Kong but if you do watch your luggage allowance leaving China, they were prone to punitive, and would appear arbitrary*, excess baggage charges if even slightly overweigh when we visited. (*they will haggle if you don't look too prosperous)

i am on mainland china for a couple of days and then flying back through hong kong. i shouldn't have much luggage, only changes of clothes and a pair of work boots.

The airport is something else. I spent a full evening there when one of my flights was delayed due to a hurricane. Nice replica of Kittyhawk hung in the rafters too. The train from the airport into Kowloon is very nice and fast. Where are you going to in mainland China? Guangzhou by any chance? I spent a lot of time there in the past and there is a lot to see, just don't try to move about at peak times the traffic is terrible. Me, not jealous at all.

I am going to Zhuhai. We have a days visit to do there, and a day of doing a report before heading back to blighty. I am not sure quite where we are staying yet, but there has been talk of staying in Shenzhen and just going to Zhuhai for the day.

We visited the year before the handover and then a few years afterwards. The ferry is now a very sanitised bland version of what it was. The late night laser display viewed from Kowloon is pretty spectacular if you like that sort of thing...we did!

Yep, big place Shenzhen. I spent a week there during Chinese New Year, in fact it was my first time in China and i thought there was a Military coup going on when the fire crackers started! those things are loud! Watch out for the families of 5 on a scooter too hilarious!
