John,
If you do make a set, they could be passed down to your children / grandchildren, that gives them some lasting value doesn't it. :)

Paul / Philly / Bugbear,
Thanks for the tips & links :D - As is often the case I find answers on UKW and expressed in nice way. How i wish it could be so on other forums :(

losos another thought is to recycle old metal files. they are a little brittle, but when blunt can be tempered so that they can be used for scrapers etc.

basically this is a heating process where you draw out the brittleness.
since where you are now still has an engineering industry for the moment,
you should be able to find out about this easily and quickly.

John

That looks really neat.

Can I suggested you stamp your maker's mark on it so that it will be far easier to identify when it comes up for auction in 100 years time

Paul,

Yes, thanks, I was just looking at a drawer of old, blunt, files the other day (Wondering what to do with them  )

And yes, the traditional engineering machine works do still abound in this part of Europe and blacksmiths shops as well 'tho both are feeling the icy winds from China :( (I think that's the appropriate emoticon to use, 'tho some may disagree!!)

thing about files is that you have tangs so they can fit handles easily,
and you can grind the teeth away, and then re-shape.

as for the cold winds, sure it is not the smog
