Holes in burr veneers

How does one (royally speaking) go about filling those holes in burr, and other, veneers?

I have read of those wax crayons (do they really set that hard?) but they seem very expensive if you are only doing this as a hobby and not very often.

this stuff works quite well and last ages. get a cheapy soldering iron and some mdf then if the colour doesn't exist mix it up on the mdf.

if there is just the right colour hold it above said hole and touch the iron too it hot (obviousley :roll: ) and let a couple of drops land then leave to set.

gently pare off with a sharp chisel the excess. it should scrape nice and flat with the veneer, if done well it looks pretty good.

It depends how big the holes are. If the holes are small, sticks are fine. I made this table top in burry maple

Some of the holes were a good 10mm diameter, so I traced the shapes onto paper , stuck the paper to a suitable piece of veneer with double sided tape and then cut round it with a scalpen angled at 45deg under the tracing . I then trimmed the hole to a similar angle . Some adjustments to the fiinished "knots" were made with sand paper and then I glued them in. Any minor discrepancies were filled with wax. I reckon I could find them in the finished table but I think most others would struggle. I also used this technique successfully with a curved spli about 50 mm long. The technique takes time and patience but is not really that difficult. Good luck,

Thanks Adidat. Don't know why I couldn't get it to work. Glad you like the table - about 2 1/2 years work (not continuous) from design idea to completion. Ifyou are interested I could try to post pics of underframe which is unconventional.
