my starter lathe died

i am having withdrawal symptoms

do i get a new one from axi ? jet or axi?
i like the idea of a vs

or look out for a record cl3 \ cl4 ?

Steve

i think i have decided on the Jet JML1014
with a bed extension

it is a rush decision but i am getting withdrawals already
i will go to axi tomorrow to take a look at one
only 2 days since my lathe died

cant see any point in saving anything from old lathe..guess it has a scrap value ?

I have the 1014 but without the extension and I'm very happy with it.
Bought last december and only regret is that I didn't stretch to the variable speed model which was just too expensive.

Hi

Have you considered the Record Power DML 305? RP offer a better warranty, not that I've ever had cause to use it.

25% heavier and greater capacity over and along the bed.

May be worth putting on E-Bay, somebody may have a similar lathe needing parts or willing to put back to working order. Just describe it as 'for parts or repair'. Surprising what sells on E-Bay.

Regards Keith

I did wonder if I will regret not getting a VS
but the cost difference pushes over my budget

Exactly my situation Steve and changing the belt is pretty quick but vs would be nice and with hindsight I wish I'd waited and saved a bit more.

feel a bit sad replying to my own thread

had a trip to axi today
big mistake..i have got the feeling i will stretch the budget to the AT1416VS
it seems well built and has a 3year warranty...the jet only comes with 1 year
i know the records have 5 year , but the record vs pushes the budget much too far

unless anyone can tell me why i shouldn't buy it

I had the 1416vs all of last year, I absolutely loved it. It was my first lathe and was used every week for several evening a week. It just purred along with its induction motor. The constant variable speed and reverse really is a luxury, but once you have it, you would never go to a belt change again.

I made loads of goodies from thimble sized goblets, 40 or so pens and up to a 13 1/2 inch elm bowl. There is plenty of power and a joy to use.

I was gifted an upgrade to the Axi 1628vs this January, but as yet, I still haven't made anything on my new lathe that wouldn't easily of been made with the 1416. You will love it, cry once at the expense and feel the pleasure of using a quality bit of kit every time you switch it on.

For mounting to a bench, see my post on making the blind holes for bolting down, they can be a pain to mark accurately otherwise. If you need a chuck, ask for a deal when buying the lathe, Axi are very receptive to a bundle.

Go for it Steve.

u sold me

what chuck should i be asking for ?

Steve

Sk100 is a perfectly good chuck. I have 3 of the k100, a k114 clubman they sold off at the release of the sk series, and an evolution. With the new lathe I picked up the evolution bare chuck for £80 instead of £160, but with the 1416 I had the sk100 as a set with the c jaws, screw drive and face ring for £85, listed then at £135. I'm not really convinced there is a £50 benefit in the evolution. The c jaws are a good set, but I did find it difficult to stop adding jaw sets at about one a month. The O'donnels are superb, if a little pricey, then a set of g's, a's, cole, spigot. :D

There isn't much I can't hold now!

My only advice is no matter what lathe you decide to go for is to save that extra amount required to upgrade to the variable speed version it makes life so much easier.
