Hi chaps, not been around for a while, been working away.

Back now and been asked to put a hipped roof on a garage. While i have been away the GF has boxed up all my books in anticipation of a major refurb on the house.Problem is,she has packed all my roofing books/span tables away. They don't seem to be available on Building Control anymore.

Anyone point me in the direction of a site with this info,i could take an educated guess but don't want to fall foul of BC.

The roof is double hipped,30 degree pitch,7200 long,5900 wide.Need info on timber sizes/span lengths, binders and hangers.

Otherwise it's off to the library(not holding my breath if they have the info) or i will have to buy the tables from somewhere but doing it on Wednesday so need to order timber today.

Nice to be back.

Thanks in advance.

Careful!!!

This will presumably need Building Regs approval, for which it will require engineer's calculations. Don't be doing a cut roof this size with back-of -an-envelope calcs!! Pass the buck quickly...........your client should be told that it isn't a matter for you. I assume this is being done on Building Notices, in which case you can (will) be required to take the roof down if it doesn't comply.

Thanks for the replies chaps.

I see where you are coming from Mike.I don't do back of the envelope calculations.I have been on site, seen the plans but there is now a change from trusses to cut roof because of time constraints.Basically they want it doing straight away.I have done all the calculations for lengths, plumb and seat cuts, centres and everything else.Just don't have my roofing ready reckoner to hand to check out section sizes,i.e. 4"x2",5"x2",6"x2".What section for binders and hangers etc.

Sorry Steve,

I have obviously got these figures, but I can't give them to you. As I said, unequivocably, this roof requires engineer's calcs to show compliance. The tables are no longer a way of proving a roof.

You Building Inspector may well be very angry, and, I say again, you can be asked to take your work down. Tell your client that are procedures to follow.........

I don't understand what you are getting at.I do roofs like this all the time, working from plans that never have any detail and i can't ever remember having engineers calcs to do a cut roof.Never had to remove one either.Sometimes asked to put in an extra binder/hanger but that's about it.

Are you saying that TRADA roof size tables are wrong and not to be trusted,or that they are not recognised by BCO's ?, because in these situations the first thing they reach for is this publication.
