Following on from the Woolies post.

SWMBO & I have developed a sad game  when we are out shopping: we grade chain stores on their likely demise.

Grades are
Go bust
limp along
decline
Thrive & grow

eg

Jessops -go bust
Boots limp along
Tesco decline (backlash)
Barrat & Holland - go bust
Waitrose decline
Top shop -go bust
Focus -go bust
Dixons/Currys decline
Smiths decline
Waterstones decline
Primark thrive
JBB sport go bust

This is purely based on the service & value for money we get at these places.

You can't have both Waitrose & Tesco in decline... Opposite ends of the same essential market. Tesco should thrive at Waitrose's expense. Waitrose does, however, have the more mature stable market and people less likely to migrate to Tesco regardless of the savings.

They could both thrive though. Ex-Waitrose customers end up in Tesco and drive their borderline customer over to Waitrose.
