One thing I haven't seen on any of these high chairs is any type of padding on the seat. All the seat pieces are flat as well, could lead to numb bum syndrome and an unhappy baby.

You haven't been a baby in awhile have you? They carry their own padding with their nappies on.

So here's my idea for a tray. It isn't totally worked out but my thought was that the brackets for attaching the tray would slip over the tops of the uprights. There'd be no hardware attaching them to the uprights but perhaps a stretcher between them behind the backrest. The tray would swing down and perhaps the tray itself would slide a bit in the support arms. My thought is that when this is removed, there'd be no sign that if was ever there.

I like that idea very much Dave. How would it fit to the chair, dowel?

Sorry, should have given you another view.

I didn't draw it in but I think there might need to be a stretcher across the back or maybe the brackets that mount on the uprights of the chair wrap almost completely around to keep them from spreading. I didn't want to do anything to the chair that would leave holes when the tray is removed.

Hello,

Although making the wooden tray etc is undeniably a nice project, to my mind part of the charm of the trip-tapp chairs is that the child is eating at the table from the start, not on their own. Apparently (I have read) this helps with their eating habbits.

Our solution is to use one of these "TinyDiner" mats on the table with it:

Please don't get me wrong - I'm not wanting to spoil your project!!!

Jimbo, that's why I never ended up building a tray for our Tripp Trapp. ;)

I want to thank everyone for their input, especially Dave for taking time to sketch up the tray.

For now I have decided not to build the high chair. Bearing in mind the safety issues listed above, I should probably not be building a child's seat as my first real project (by 'real' I mean something good enough to be displayed in the house). I'm going to build something a bit more basic like a stool or side table. We will buy the high chair and, when I have a couple of projects under my belt, I will build her something she can hand down to her own children.

We're going to test drive the Tripp Trapp at a local Mothercare and see how we like it. I certainly don't want any plastic rubbish.

Thanks again
