My first post. I need a little advice regarding a kity multi function tool I recently bought and am setting up in my shed.

It has a bench saw, a spindle moulder, a planner/thicknesser and router built in to it. I would like to download some instructions as I got a box of parts thrown in but am not sure how everything fits together. I have looked online but the kity site just deals with their more recent machines and this must be many years old.

The router and spindle moulder are my main areas of concern - when I attach the belt to the spindle moulder it strains to start so I turn it off as I don't want to damage the motor. Could the belt be too tight? If so where can I order a new belt? Can the spindle moulder be repositioned to allow for a little slack?

When using the router the levers only really allow me to move the block of wood a few inches in either direction where as I would ideally want to cut down the entire length of the block, say 30" if I were making a cabinet door. I guess the levers are therefore just for precision cuts, is this right?

Finally, I would really like to talk with someone who owns a similar Kity to ask a few other general questions.

Help would be very much appreciated.

Thx

Hi
The motor should be on a sliding adjuster with a handle just beneath it. If it is jammed it is quite possible that there is sawdfust in the mechanism. The Spindle moulder mounting is bolted through slots in the mounting so about 20mm of adjustment is possible.

I have just spent the last few days stripping down every componant of my kity, as it was in near scrap condition, so will help if I can.

On mine the motor is bolted to the base plate of the saw and to adjust the belts both the spindle and saw can be moved on there base plates.
The tension is set with the spindle at mid height and the belt has to be twisted 90 deg to fit the pulleys it is important to twist it the correct way or the spindle will rotate the wrong way.
To set the tension put the belt on and move the spindle machine away from the motor till the belt is not slack then remove the belt and move the machine 2 or 3 more mm away from the motor and then tighten the mounting bolts.
I think that what you are calling the router is the slot morticer and it does only move a few inches either way with adjustable stops to set the length of the mortice. Doors would be done on the spindle.
All in all once set up they are a great little machine.

Hey Duncan

Is it the small K5 / Bestcombi model? As Powertools says it won't be a router but the morticer fitted to the 5 function models (table slots into the side of the planer/thicknesser with the cutter fitted into a drill type chuck)

if it is then I have the manual for the K5 and could email it to you in pdf format. I don't have instructions for the larger models but have a little information in print format.

cheers

Yes, this is the same setup as mine, the motor is bolted to the table. I will check to see if the spindle can be moved - it did work do this could have shifted when it was being moved and simply needs adjustment - i will check.

I will also check the belt to make sure it is twisted 90 deg - simple point, thanks for instructions on how to do this. Very helpful.

Yes, your comment makes sense, the door would be done on the spindle so I guess I can buy an accessory that will route a channel - the only blades I have at the moment are more for rounding edges.

I assume you have a Kity - is that right?

The motor is fixed to the table. I will check the Spindle Moulder for any "give" in the mounting bolts. Ideally, I would like to chat through each tool to see what function they each perform - other than the obvious. For example, I was practising tenon and mortice joints by hand with a chisel and tenon saw, then bought a second hand mortice machine to help make the motice joints more precise and hope now that Kity can help me get ever more precise. Have you created mortice and tenon joints with it? If so, can you let me know how?

Hi Bob,

It has a planner/thicknesser, a spindle moulder, a bench saw and what I thought was a router (drill type chuck) so it is a 4 in 1 machine. It would be great if I could find a table that slots into the side of the planner/thicknesser - how can I tell if my Kity has this ability - I may not be looking in the right place.

It would be great if you could send the manual you have, it may help me make some progress at least. The number of attachments is mind boggling and I am sure they will each offer enormous pleasure once I know what the heck they do and how they attach.

Thanks

Duncan

Hi,

it is too dark for me to take a picture of it in my shed tonight but I have found one on gumtree that is identical. Can you tell me which model it is? Thanks for writing the post powertools, pity it didn't show up.

That looks like a later model than mine but many things will be the same.

Any manuals or PDF's would be greatly appreciate and if you get a chance to write that long post again then please do. Very very much appreciated by a complete amateur working his way up to wood rat status very very slowly.

Thanks

Duncan

Hi Duncan
Happy to send you the manual but need your email address. Don't post it here, just send me an email to bob.lonsdale51(at)btinternet(dot)com

I don't have pics of the other models but here is one of the brochure of the K5 (older K5 has splayed legs, newer bestcombi is green/red whilst latest Bestcombi 2000 etc models are different design and spec).

.
Slot morticer is the table with levers (if yours has this then it's 5 function as planer/thicknesser counts as 2). This table has 2 protruding steel bars which locate into holes in the thicknesser plate and seccured by a handscrew. Verticle adjustment is via the thicknesser function.

Hi again Duncan

Posts crossed, mine was delayed somehow :?

It looks like a K704 model to me or even possibly a CK26. The model number should be on the rating plate if it's still there.

I don't have a manual for these but do have a brochure and specs for the 704 as well as old price lists accessories info so happy to scan these if you want.

cheers

I give up.
Yet another post not shown up.

I've lost 3 in the last few days including one on this thread. I wonder if it's a site problem?

I don't know what it is but op dosen't answer questions and help offered dosen't show there is no point in keeping on.

This is great! Mine must be a much older version as it has splayed legs and the morticer is on the other side independent of any other tool with its own band. Please send anything through to me by email. I emailed you so you have my contact details.

Many many thanks.

Yes, please send me the brochure and specs for the 704 as well as old price lists accessories info if you can find them time to scan them in for me. I will check the rating plate again in daylight.

Great stuff, many thanks.
