I just tried to order a Lie Nielsen No 4 Bronze, online, from LN in USA.

Great until I reached 'preferred shipping'. No shipping rate was given to UK. I was then directed to two UK suppliers, who obviously will want to charge far more for the tool.

Has anyone bought one of these planes from the States please? Or is it no less expensive than buying from UK suppliers?

Any helpful info gratefully received. (I am a bit miffed to say the least and I hope I don't get this problem with Blue Spruce!)

Thanks in aticipation

John :)

The subject of buying tools direct from the States has been done to death many times on this forum.

I can't remember if it's LN or LV usually email shipping costs after you purchase, and when you confirm if the quotation is ok they then proceed with the order.

Send them an email to ask. I;m sure you will get a quick answer.

Also you could try some of their dealers in the US as many of them ship to rest of world.

regards

Alan

Thanks guys..
Appreciated.

It was just that I got through the whole procedure before shippng was mentioned!! :)

Thanks again.

Hello there John, I am not sure you will save much after accounting for the shipping, duty and handling charges and vat which will all be added.

I don't know what rate of duty applies but in theory it should serve to equalise UK and US prices.

Tony.

Thanks again guys.. yes, I am aware of the duty problem, but it's a a chance I'll take if I can save a few quid.
Not that I am a cheapskate, but even if I save a mere £30.00, it will pay for a few drinks, when I finish the latest commission.

Regards
John :)

Tony.

And you end up paying £8 for the pleasure of the carrier accepting your payment of duty...

Hi Blue,
Thanks for that .
No problem.

I shall have a relative in the States in a few days. I better make an arrangement with him before he leaves!

The other guitarist in my band is coming back to the UK from his current place of residence in New York in July for our last tour. A set of LN bevel edge chisels will tucked away in his luggage for me! If you can wait till then, he might be persuaded to carry a little more!

I have a lot of LN planes, saws and chisels and many of them came from the factory direct. Simply place the order and they wll email you the postage costs.
Typically, you will wait 4-6 weeks and save £20-40 (after duties, post parcel force rip-off etc.)

Or Aminster will have it with you next day, but you pay £20-40 more...

Hi Tony,

Thank you for the reply.

I am envisaging the item won't come in under the radar, however I buy it from the USA!

I don't mind that so much, but if Customs do trap it, I have to haul myself all across the city (petrol) or spend a couple wasted hours on the bus! Then I have to pay the tax and pay for the privelege of paying the tax! :x

I need other items, so I'll wait a while now and try the avenue suggested earlier in the thread.

Thanks again Tony.
Regards
John :)
