Good idea with the two washers but wasn't sure what the size was to order when i was looking on line, all i know is that it is 20mm dia in the middle 30mm outer dia.
Any idea why the handle is stiffer to turn now??

Washer taking up spare shaft length? can you adjust position of locating/anchoring collar or handwheel spacing on end of shaft.?

Sorry Chas but how does that make turning the handwheel tighter??

Don't know the specifics of your tailstock fittings but the threaded lead screw is 'trapped' at the rear end of your tailstock by some method to provide the datum and driving force for the quill, if the distance between what looks like the locating collar and the hand is reduced because of the fitting of the thrust washer then tightening up the hand wheel on the end of the lead screw could be clamping the new washer too tightly.

Right got it now Chas
So if i put the two thrust washers on the grub screw in the handle might not even locate into the original hole for the grub screw so i would need to drill another locating recess/hole for the GS??
