Frontpage 2003 is a perfect example.
For a piece of software you pay £100 or so for, it's support for HTML4, i.e. <div>, <span>, etc, was pretty poor.
There was no integrated JavaScript support. It would also rewrite your HTML at will.
How does a single person or small team do any better than Microsofts minions?
Having said that, there is a guy I know is Australia that has single-handed managed to produce a better Web server on OpenVMS ( http://wasd.vsm.com.au/ ) than Apache, so the rule is always there to be broken.
