Alan,
I did a two day course with Peter Child in Essex.
The first thing he taught me to turn was a simple mushroom with the bark left on the head, this was good spindle practise .
Then I turned a simple fruit bowl from a piece of Spalted Beech, this still has pride of place on my dinning room table.
Then I made a simple box with a domed lid from ash and a handle from mahogony, and this lives on my kitchen window ledge.
These three projects were simple to make, used all the main turning tools and were completed in two days.
They are useful and gave me a real sense of using the lathe for a purpose, rather than for the sake of turning a piece of wood.
Regards - Martin.
