Help Needed With Wood I.D Hard or soft wood?

Hi,
I have been given a lump of wood from a mate, he has the other half.
It has a sort of flowery smell when cut and is heavy,
Is or can I use it for turning?
Is it a hard or soft wood (My mate thinks it is a hard wood I think it is a soft wood)

It was a beautiful aroma, That really stood out for us.

I think it's 98% certain that you've got some slow-grown 'redwood' i.e. Pinus Sylvestris. The grain growth pattern and the dusty resin round the knot are clues.

It does have a lovely piney smell. It's obviously been sitting around for a few years because it doesn't get that yellowy look straight away, it looks paler when fresh. If you plane the side of it you should see the pinkish heartwood that gives it the 'redwood' name.

It is a conifer so by definition a softwood. It can be turned but most people would try and use it for drawer bottoms. it ' repels moths and attracts customers' .
