Well the #7 arrived and a lovely bit of kit is is too... slight marr in the casting on the nose but nothing functionally imparing so will live with it I guess.
Took all the parts apart to familiarise myself with it - I have only used the Veritas LA Jack previously and the 'controls' are a little different but quite intuitive.
Fished out a half plank of some mystery wood from the skip the other day and discovered/think it is cherry. Quite hard/heavy and pinky red with wavy grain and some knots.
Massive amount of warp/bend in it so am guessing that's why it was chucked.
Decided it will be a good board for practicing on ... set the LAJ to a roughish cut and took off most of the bumps before having a go with the #7... very nice ! Took it apart again to hone the blade and pay a bit of attention to set it up for a slight cut and had a go again - very impressive.
