Here's a scan, just linked because it's huge for the sake of grain detail. The full jpeg is 50x50mm.

It came in a box of various bits of hardwoods, which I bought as a kind of sample pack because whoever owned them took good care in labelling the wood type on nearly every piece.

I don't care much for the look of burls, but it smells fantastic.

Any help identifying it would be appreciated.

I've fixed the link so now you can just click on it. I took the thing to the builders merchants today but forgot to ask the fella if he had any idea by the time I got there.

I also found another one in the box bookmatched to the first. I figure the guy was using these for knife handles. They're only 10x4cm but with two of them I could maybe rout the inside out and make a shallow box for something.

Where is it from- is the .co.nz link relevant to it?

I would suggest burr walnut. Seems a shame to rout it out just for the sake of using something you don't like. It would make a nice knife handle.

You beat me to it. I would say walnut. Definitely a shame to rout it out with all that waste. How thick are the pieces? If thick enough you could maybe bandsaw them and make a box that way.

Both pieces are about 8mm thick so I could bandsaw them. The box idea was more to take advantage of the smell since you could get away with not finishing the inside. It'd be a shame to waste the smell on something like veneer or marquetry.

In my experience walnut smells like urine and has a more grey-ish brown colour. This wood has a cedarish smell. Looking at google image results it does look like a bubinga burl so i'll ask if there's any in stock next time i'm buying wood.

Thanks for the help!

Hmm. Nice resolution, poor focus (or perhaps camera shake), which rather reduces the detail.

It's actually a scan! I'm not too upset about the detail since it's about as good as my camera could get it, but it does kill the contrast.

Here's a huge photo with my disgusting greasy thumb for scale.

what is the wood below it please?

The desk surface? It's a piece of veneered particle board from Ikea. I think the veneer is oak, although it doesn't make a very good desk surface with the open (and unfilled) grain.

On your first, somewhat hazy, image I thought maybe camphor burl (partly the smell, partly the look in comparison to a turning blank I have), but the thumb-for-reference piccy suggest bubinga most definitely.

Cheers,
Adam

Thanks very much. I guess I should've taken a photo in the first place instead of trying to be clever.
