Hi everyone, my names Jamie,
I’m from south wales.
To cut a long story short, i used to be a very successful tradesman 3 years ago until meningitis took a big dump on that.
Thankfully I am in recovery and still retain my physical functions. I have some great tools a large area to work in and set up a workshop But I am completely lost and under educated in almost every aspect.
I really need mentoring and steering in the right direction.
I lack really fundamental things but at the same time I can achieve reasonably technical tasks…………..I think!!

I let you be the judge

Hi welcome.

Thank you very much!
I’ve done the staircase from scratch because my brother wanted deeper steps…….I’ve jointed the stringers from 2 pieces and jointed the steps, it’s a bit rough but there’s no creaks, they are all the same size and considering I’ve never done it before I’m satisfied!

Any tips on getting the new pine to look golden and aged like the newel posts will be please?

Also I’ve come across an old door frame which I’ve learned (the hard way) is west African Albizia any thoughts on anything I could make from it for a good practice/project please? it’s beautiful and I don’t want to use it for something crap like more handles 😂
Thanks

Commiserations on the health issues, mine have got in the way of my working too and it's a bugger.

When you say you were a tradesman, I'm assuming carpenter? Were you self employed? If so, making the move to workshop work should be fairly natural.

On aging the pine, it'll be hard to get it to match perfectly and that being the case here I would look at contrasting it against it personally. Stairs were often painted, and not everything has to be 'bare' wood.

If you do want to try and get close, shellac and wax is quite easy to add slowly until it matches, but it'll be slow!

Thank you very much for the response, I started off as a self employed tiler and learned everything else on the go.
I ended up doing full revamps and fits for wren magnet and sigma 3 kitchens.
I picked up the joinery side of things from having to make custom edge trims and decorative boxings with a router and a few other customised jobs like a kitchen island half tiles half oak.
Also some oak doors pic’s attached
