Hi all,i found your site while i was doing some research into making a new workbench and have been lurking ever since,I wasn't sure where to introduce myself so so i thought i should just jump in! I lost my workshop recently (not down to the beer for once!) and am looking for another so in the meantime i had to make do with the garden.I decided to only use hand tools, which meant a few days of cleaning and sharpening as many of my tools had been treated roughly on various sites and jobs, this proved very cathartic and even led to some cash being spent on new goodies. The bench is a bit of a "lowbrid" based loosely on a bench found on the Vasa warship, sunk in 1628, with a vise added.Since the photo i have had a friend make some holdfasts which need a little tweeking so i have'nt drilled the top and deadman yet.It is built of chestnut, oak and sycamore from stock.Hope this pic works! Hi & welcome. No, you've not been reported..........that is the spam trap cutting in automatically. Another post or two and everything starts to work properly, and your photos will then show.

Hi squib,

Welcome to the forum. :D

Your picture has been caught by our spam trap, that will stop once you have a few more posts to your name, here it is:

Useful looking bench, look forward to seeing what you make on it. 8)

Now I like that bench :), where did you find the references to the sunken warship?

By the way Hello, keep up the good work.

Welcome. Nice looking 'bench. :)

Do you intend to do a lot of hand tool work; preparing all your stock by hand?

The bench is being "pickled" in raw linseed as i like the feel and look of it and i am not sure i shall be able to maintain a pristine bench.I fully intend to use it for hand tool only use and am really enjoying the peace, for a while ,of no machines. How long before the hairs on my arms grow back? :)

Hi Squib,

Nice bench. How do you find the leg vice? I've never used one myself.

Cheers,

Richard

I think compared to a quick release vice it is a litle slow but the smile value of having made it really outways everything else.I found the vice thread in a local antique shop having looked for a wooden screw or even a large tap and die set.I even considered making a die.I was going to make an english pattern bench but its the old chicken egg situation, you need a bench to make a bench.so this was to be the first step but somehow this one works really well(when its not raining!)Next are some new tressles ,a sawing bench and then a campaign chair that i have already made a working 'rough up' of.
ps. I would love to know how to post my pics a little larger, any pointers?

squib, a question about the leg vice. When working on the end of say a bit of 2" x 1" (50mm x 25mm) how does the vice grip the stock. I'm thinking if the stock is held vertically do the jaws remain parallel, or do they squint and end up gripping an edge, with possible damage.

Hi xy, if you click on the pic and see at the bottom of the vice by the left leg you can just see the parrallel guide which one can put a dowel in to keep the leg where you want it .Hope this makes sense.(That guide is tenoned into the bottom of the vice.)Also if you grip stock vertically it grips the whole length as the legs are flush with the top.
