Hello TX.
If you are going to cut a piece of 4x2 to 4x1, its more than likely a bandsaw would be used unless the sawyer has a very high spec. table saw.
I would reckon to lose an 1/8" of kerf so there should be 3/16" left on each piece of 4x1 to play with. Then the thicknesser jumps in. (for me anyway)
