Andy if the capacitor was on its way out I think you would see a reluctance for the motor to start up, if it spins up quickly then it is most likely OK.

If the fan was fouling badly then it may have been preventing the motor reaching running speed, in which case it could/would heat up and loose power (magnetic slip) quite easily if loaded.

If problem was down to a blunt blade should there have been scorching on the wood?

Maybe not if the kerf was wide enough to prevent binding, bit like trying to cut a piece of steak with a kiddy knife if the blade isn't sharp though.

Andy are there any scratches inside the stator? (suggests bearigs had it)

the washer should be bent like that, it is a spring washer to take up end float

How does the motor smell? Strongly? burnt?

Had to look stator up to find out what it was

I do not recall seeing any scratches inside the motor when I had it apart and looking again at the full sized images I have there does not appear to be any visible scratches. The motor is back in the saw and sounds "sweet" and "normal".
The motor when I took it apart, 2 days after using it, did not smell strongly nor appear burnt.

I'll try and buy a new blade before the weekend and give it a sterner test to see if the problems of last weekend repeat themselves.

Do you think that it is possible that the fixings, mountings etc had become loose and in dismantling, adjusting and resetting I've effectively performed a service and the problem will have gone away?
This is the first time in about 10 years I've had the saw of it's base and given it a thorough clean - surprising how much more easy it is to raise and lower the blade now
Although, in my defence, I'd be surprised if my saw has been used as much in 10 years as yours has in 10 months.

My guess would be the fan fouling on the case that was causing the problem as explained by Chas.

I used to work in the steel industry, and we used to see this problem a lot, usually where the fan cowl had taken a whack and gone out of kilter (they are usually only held in place by three small screws).

I think you have probably solved the issue, but you won't know for certain until you give it a thorough try-out.

I bought a new standard steel blade 18 dents (sorry teeth) from one of the DIY sheds here (Castorma).

I also moved my half fence back so instead of stopping half way along the blade it now finishes at the point where the last tooth cuts through the wood as per Steve's excellent video.

I ran a further 6 pieces of the same wood as last weekend through the saw. It did not stall once & the motor did not get hot.

The el cheapo blade made a helluva racket though but now I know the saw is OK I'll buy a decent one.
