Andy if the capacitor was on its way out I think you would see a reluctance for the motor to start up, if it spins up quickly then it is most likely OK.
If the fan was fouling badly then it may have been preventing the motor reaching running speed, in which case it could/would heat up and loose power (magnetic slip) quite easily if loaded.
