Hello all,

I went to pick up some Liberon shellac from a local store (not cornelissen) and was handed this.

https://www.cornelissen.com/water-c...lacquer/roberson-crystal-shellac-varnish.html

I was assured it was the same stuff but seeing as it says 'shellac' and not shellac I have a suspicion its not actually got any shellac in it.

Has anyone given it a go or used it for its intended purpose? (gilding)

Thanks in advance

It will do exactly as it says on the bottle - provide a sealant coating over the gilding.
What might be more interesting is what sort of solvent is involved here. This would be relevant if there was a need to wash off the finish later.
Read the label on the bottle, where it says what to wash the brushes with.
If it says to use meths, then I'd be comfortable to continue using it.

I've just done a google and found this page on another store with a bit more info,

You can also zoom in on the product picture and read the label. It says to clean brushes and tools with methylated spirit. Contains methylated spirit and aldehyde.

It needs a lot of meths to remove ALL the shellac from a brush so that it dries soft. It is cheaper and easier to soak the brush in meths, then wash it in bleach while the shellac is soft. This will keep the brush soft.
