Jake if you read that thread brazing or silver soldering is not too tricky and cheap to have a go at.

Cheers

No, I know. I was, confusingly, in the second sentence saying to Steve (Maskery) that his comments about gluing weren't totally off the mark.

Hi,

I don't know if anyone is interested, but my brother in Australia says his company glues aluminium all the time using a 3M product, called ‘Scotchweld 810’. This is in the commercial construction industry, so it stands up to all weathers in critical locations.

Ask for Mystic Welding Rod for welding aluminum
It says will repairAluminum, copper, brass, galvanized, pot metal and even300 series stainless steel .It will also jion dissimilar metals. It flows when the base metal reaches 720 to 800 degrees....heating to be done by propane or mapp gas torch

That's brazing, rather than welding (I think!).

It doesn't sound an easy process, Steve, so you weren't that far wrong.

Its easy and fast, this guy had the can finished in about a minute and the propeller in 5 ground with a file to smooth it.

Hi there ...
I don't know if would help you much ....

I recall watching a documentary about the development of the Lotus Elise and a large section of the prog' was dedicated to the 'revolutionary aluminium chassis' .... so having read the nature of the original query, I was having a wee look on 'tinternet...

Turns out Lotus glued AND rivetted the Aluminium Chassis
( http://www.elises.co.uk/components/s1/c ... index.html )

If I can remember it rightly - I'm sure in the docu', they ( Lotus ) subby'd the chassis and some of the development to Hydro AS in Norway...

I guess if you had a bit of time, you could perhaps trace some info via the "LOTUS ELISE / CHASSIS DEVELOPMENT / HYDRO or NORSKE HYDRO" type of trail ....

may be a way of getting hold of some info perhaps ?

At the Westonbirt show this year, a man was demonstrating and selling 'Liquid Weld,' sticks all manner of materials and to one another too, I have used it to stick various metals to try it out, great success.
Call Liquid weld on 07782 220 213 for supply.
Derek.
