Hi Everyone,

I'm going to the Harrogate show in a couple (or 3) of weeks, but have never been to any sort of woodworking show before. Initially I thought it would be all demos, but someone told me to take plenty of money for tool purchases! So now I'm wondering what sort of thing might be for sale, large machines or the latest hand tools? What's for sale and what have you bought at shows in the past?

Cheers, Froggy.

By the way, being my first show and as I live in France I have never met most of you. So if anyone would like to meet up there for a chat and a brew please give me a shout. I will be there all three days and am staying at the Cedar Court hotel.

All sorts, covering mostly everything.

I live nearby and will likely be going. Cedar Court hotel, do you mean in Wakefield?

Harrogate is my favourite show, a good range of hand tools, small machines and power tools. Lots of woodturners and a couple of us woodworkers demonstrating. We will be taking the tool shop again, pop in to say hello if you get chance.

The demonstrator and exhibitor list is here, http://www.skpromotions.co.uk

Cheers Peter

I've been for the past 5 years. In my experience they have most things for sale from machines to 100 year old carving chisels and most hings inbetween. I will be going on the Saturday with my wife and son.

Hi Matt, Are your wife and son interested in woodworking too or are they there under duress?

The Harrogate show is ok. Nothing on the scale of a U.S. Show in terms of demos and lectures etc. There is quite a lot of turning going on though. Lot of tools, but you can go to a DIY superstore or a Axminster to see those. I was a bit on the underwhelmed side when I went last, so keep your expectations in check.

Hi Bodgers thanks for that. I don't really have any expectations as I've never been to a woodworking show before, but I'm sure I'll enjoy it whatever. Anything to do with wood keeps me happy!

There is always a fair few turning demonstrators at the shows but there will be a few of us woodworkers demonstrating as well, I would hope you will see a wider variety of tools than just going to Axi, we will have at least a couple a couple of hundred tools you won't find anywhere else in the UK. But it is true that the UK shows won't match the scale of those in the USA.

Cheers Peter

The last time I went I enjoyed the carving club stands and the opportunity to chat to some of the helpful and very friendly carvers. Mike Painter was there too.

Can't agree with you on that Bodgers though I can't comment on the US shows I've always considered there to be a great deal to see at Harrogate. You certainly won't find anything like thewide range of wood related tools and materials without visiting quite a number of different outlets.

Many people just don't have the retailers within reach to be able to do that and Harrogate is the only event they can see them under one roof. Not all of us live in the south of the country! ( Not you of course).
It's also an event where many people from the forum communities can meet up, say hello and chew the sawdust :) .
