I've been watching EBay for used lathes near me (Hawick, Scottish Borders) and have seen a few things appear within 100 miles.

Recently the above lathe has appeared that is only about 10 miles from the house but I can't find much information on it. Does anyone know much about this lathe? Would it be a good buy for a first timer?

I do have a budget up to £300 (maybe more) but can't help but feel I would get more for my money with a used lathe?

the graduate is an excellent lathe and is widely used by pro turners (being of heavy cast iron construction it doesnt suffer vibration problems like some lighter lathes.

however you will be extremly lucky to get one for 300 notes - these are in serious demand and regularly change hands for arround a £K - also note that those that are offered more cheaply are often 3 phase so you would also need to change the motor over if you dont have a 3 phase circuit in your shop

Hi Mike.

Try this Link it should tell you all you need to know about the Graduate.

Sorry to say I don't think you'll get one for £300. Yet stranger things have happened.

I wasn't really sure how much it would go for - I can stretch a bit but not to £1000!!!!

Worth keeping an eye on it given how close it is.

What else would you suggest for £300?

Shop around on ebay and other sites they can be had for a lot less than a grand , i sold mine a few months ago for £400 and it had the sanding disc / bowl turning attatchment fitted  and it was 3 phase so would have needed a new motor or 3 phase supply

1st lathe I ever used was a Graduate, great machine. Even if it is 3 phase you can get an inverter and you then have variable speed as well. If you can get it within your budget then go for it.

Thanks guys, I'll keep an eye on it on the off chance it goes for something near my budget.

LRE of Warrington do rebuilt Graduates. Lots of useful info on their website.

I checked again - it jumped by over £450 in 12 hours!!!

Looks like its back to trawling EBay for me!!

Remember you can only do this if the motor is either 240v 3-phase or dual voltage (415/240). But given that changing speed on the Graduate is not the easiest job around, it's certainly worthwhile if you can get one.
