I have e a few projects I want to start. I have finished my workshop and are ready to move to the next level of project. However trying to find places to buy different hardwoods is proving to be difficult.

The few I have found online are only oak or American white oak. Any suggestions or is there a timber merchant worth the drive to buy The right selection?

Well you stopped me there Marcros, I live about 10 minutes away and I’m on my way there today, just some prime 1 inch Oak planks and some firewood.
Yes don’t go by the website, they do steamed beach American ash English ash, stopped doing maple which is annoying and quite a few other timbers I can’t put to mind. What was it you were thinking of LostOz? I can have a poke about today if you want. Ian

Forgot to say they also do their own oak flooring, random lengths in 3,4,5,6,7,8”widths, I’ve done most of the ground floor of my house and my sons, really super stuff and inexpensive.

Lucky boy! You actually have 'timber merchants' within a four-hour drive? No, seriously.......

Where I live, in mid Wales, there are thousands of tons of 'Pudding-wood' growing and increasingly being cut - commercial junk that I wouldn't put on the fire - and NO merchants of decent quality dried hard-woods. Sadly, an old friend who was a commercial maker in Penuwch and could be relied on to get me some good stuff, retired a couple of years ago....... I have the same sort of issue.

As small makers, the amount of wood that we'll buy is, in reality, small beer for a lot of timer yards, typically 5 or 10 cu feet........

Anyway, I found out a long time ago, many timber sellers have rotating stocks and don't like uncertainty, so always know what you want - it makes it easier for these guys to say yes or no. What they have today, may be gone and replaced by something different next week. Also, be prepared to buy some stuff on 'spec' if they have a chance buy of a good quality bit of wind-fall, say a single tree.

Personally, I like Oak and if you can find it any more, European Oak can be very good, instead of the Bland American White Oak.

What can help, if you have the storage space, is to deliberately over-buy each time, especially the good stuff that can be hard to find and to build up a stock, instead of doing the rounds, looking each time with all the blood-pressure that entails.

Whatever, good luck!

Looking for maple and cherry, or a similar coloured wood, for a coffee table for my den

Yes, I did the whole found floor of my house in grade a (no knots) about 15 years ago and sand it every four years and are oil and still lovely.

Would like to do the up stairs, but as it is stud walls I would want to remove all the walls and lay the food and then rebuild the walls, but wife is a ’no way’

I haven’t yet, my sister lives there so I could easily, but after Somerscales I really don’t think I need to go much elsewhere – I wonder if they do Maple that would be handy. Ian

Well as I said I know they’ve stopped doing Maple, I will enquire about cherry and generally what else they have a good supply of, they do a lot of tulip wood for kitchens. They quite often have brown oak, another of my favourite timbers. Setting off soon will come back to you

I'm not far from you (Between Barnsley and Doncaster). The 2 I use are Duffield timber in North Yorkshire - they are straight up the A1 about an hour away. They usually have a large variety of wood in the 'retail' area, but have others not on show if you ask (and go in the week - not Saturday). Last time I went their selection of Cherry was poor.

Also British Hardwoods just north of Bradford are worth a look. I got loads of good cherry from here.

I've not bought anything for about a year, (Covid and Work getting in the way - plus I have a good stock on hand too) so situations may have changed.

Timber Specialists Sheffield Ltd. in Hillsborough hold a wide stock of different species and boards.

Arnold Laver also do a good range of hardwoods, but they're only held in stock at the Mossborough Sawmills site in Halfway so you need to speak to the team at halfway, it used to be a chap called Carl Peach who would sort out hardwood orders.

I've had good experiences with both, but use Lavers more as their machining charges are reasonable, so I can buy large balks and have them resawn to the dimensions I want with minimal losses (wide band resaws are substantially better on this front than anything a hobbyist could hope to own).

The Turner's Retreat in Harworth (technically North Notts, but also still "Doncaster") stocks random waney edged boards of good quality and a wide variety, in addition to their turning blanks, but usually never in any significant quantities.

Okay, just got back from Somerscales delighted with my oak, five beautifully clean boards ranging from 6 inch to 10 inch wide and 11 feet long with a reasonable sprinkling of quartersawn in amongst it, and I got a trailer full of firewood, but a bit disappointed on the range of timber, as well as what I mentioned above they also do Iroko chestnut and sapele, I don’t think they’re going to run out of Oak any time soon.

This is one place that looks like I need to visit and then start stocking up, thanks for the share

Thanks for that Doug, it’s only 30 minutes up the road and I’ve never been, it looks as if they have a good selection of types of timber, the proof often is in the visiting though! I shall have to investigate. Ian

that was the one I had in mind, but couldn't remember the name. There is another one nearby too I think which I got some yew pen blanks from once via ebay I think although that could have been NB.
