Just thought I would post a picture of the pile of hardwood I have just bought today. Most of the pile is American White Oak although you will see there is a few pieces of Steamed Beech on top too. The Oak is for another bedroom/computer suite of which I am waiting for the MDF Oak veneered panels to arrive. As for the Beech it is for the project after that which is a drop leaf dining table. I am really looking forward to these projects as they are hardwood for a change. It is about time I got a job in hardwood. I got the wood from Arnold Laver over in Hull and have to say that I was impressed with them. :D Not onlly did the guy in the yard help me sort through the timber he did all of the man handling and even took the fork truck right up to my car for me. I was surprised by the price too as it all came to just under £300 for the lot! :D Well after I have finished the panel doors I am making I shall be starting to use it and looking forward to it too. :D

I look forward to seeing how you get on with the dining table as I'm in the middle of making a smaller drop-leaf table at college (in brown oak). :)

Are you going for a traditional rule joint?

Hi Olly, yes I am going to use the traditional rule joint. In my opinion it is far more classy looking than a plain butt joint. I am also considering a little bit of inlay on the legs, something contrasting with the Beech should look nice.

Another vote for Arnold Laver in Hull. Always found the guys in the hardwood shed helpful. Price is still a wallet whacker though! Dibs.

I hav3e had a look on their website Nick but it doesn't look like they do. There is however a PDF download on there of the hardwood timber they stock so it may be worth a look. HTH.

i work just over the road from lavers in hull. excellent service. did you happen to see the waney edged beech down the left hand side of the shed? i was offered 500 for a m3 but i dont have the storage! some lovely pieces could be got if you have the shed room!

I didn't notice the waney edge stuff sorry to say as I was too busy sorting through the oak. I have to agree with you about the service it was second to none and they yard guys were very helpful considering I don't usually buy much hardwood. (I will in the future hopefully though) I am also in the same position not having much room for storage. My garage is full of wood not to mention a few push bikes of my sons and an old baththat I should have thrown out long ago.
