hardest decision

I had to take the decision today to get my 14 year old labrador put to sleep god i miss him already i have a 5 year old lab we got for this day to make it easier but he has a heart condition and it,s not looking great for him either,so i'm sitting with a box of tissues feeling guilty as anything and hurting like hell. sorry for the rant........

I have been there recently too with my black lab and it hurts so much. It took me 6 months to wise up and get another one (chocolate this time - couldn't replace him with another Black).

It still hurts but I know it was the right thing to do.

I know it hurts, our Samwise went last year, I still look round for him at times, but he was in pain and was kinder for him not have to suffer any more.

Think of the fun and love you shared with him.

you just have to remember what you have done is to save your four legged friend further suffering and remember all the happy times and joy he has brought to you and your family.
all true animal lovers know exactly how you feel and this is the hardest part of pet ownership ,losing a faithfull member of the family.
you have our thoughts and best wishes,hope your other dog is ok

I've had to make this decision 4 times in the last 20 years (including a Springer who developed Cancer when was only 4) and it never gets any easier.

My current mongrel is 14 1/2 and I fully expect to lose him this Summer, so I know just how you feel.

Jim woodworkers and dogs go together like woodworkers and a chewed pencil behind the ear. Most of us have one or more of them wandering in and out of the workshop or lying in the sawdust under the work bench. So we know how you feel and no matter how many times you do it, it never gets any easier. The thing you have to remember is that your friend was lucky enough to have someone who was brave enough to forget their feelings and think about what their hairy little pal was going through and had the guts to put him out of his misery.

Most of us have one or more of them wandering in and out of the workshop or lying in the sawdust under the work bench. So we know how you feel and no matter how many times you do it, it never gets any easier. The thing you have to remember is that your friend was lucky enough to have someone who was brave enough to forget their feelings and think about what their hairy little pal was going through and had the guts to put him out of his misery.

very true - non dog owners just dont understand the bond we have with our furry freinds - the other night swimbo and i had serious words because she said that if the dog didnt stop keeping her awake it would have to go (as in rehomed) - the dog is currently on heat and therefore licking rather more than usual.

my response was quite simple - she goes, I go ! I could have put it more tactfully but it was 4am. bottom line is that shes one of the family and you dont get rid of family members just because they are occasionally irritating.

i spent the rest of the night sleeping on the sofa with the dog - who mysteriously stopped licking.

swimbo and i have now made up so all is well in the marital home - but the doggie isnt going anywhere and that isnt negotiable.

on the topic at hand , i just hope that when the time comes for kim to need to be pts (which will hopefully not be for a fair few years yet) I will have the same courage that you have displayed in doing whats best for your furry pal no matter how much it upsets you.

Time is the great healer, you don't forget, but the pain lessens.
We were having a dog put down some years ago and I said to the vet that I wouldn't have his job what ever the pay was like. We had two other dogs at that time and he said that putting down a dog of her age, 17 years, who had obviously been well looked after, was not a problem for him.
It was owners wanting a pet put down because they wanted to go on holiday or some such that caused him pain and anger.

I feel for you Jim. My daughter had to have her dog Max put to sleep.
He was a Black lab crossed with a sheep dog.I used to have him for weeks on end. I still miss him when she comes to visit and there is no Max jumping out of the car to greet me.

It's the hardest thing to do but the dogs feelings or suffering have to come first.

I haven't had a dog for some years now and I always miss that. The last one I lost was heart wrenching but it does get a lot easier with time.

Maybe the time is coming for another as the sawdust is mounting again. I always am a soft spot for an abandonded one. Rescued my last dog and he was super.
