Yippee...this time next week it will all be over.

Am I alone in hating Christmas with all its' pseudo-bonhomie?

Well RogerS they say that life is what you make it. So if you want to complain about everything, pass judgement on things even if they are "normal" then that's a choice.

My view of Xmas is that I try to not let it get to me. Now I'm older and family has gone we only exchange presents which the family has made....no matter how well or poorly.....even my grandchildren get in on this as it saves their pocket money.

Last year I had a box of utterly brilliant cupcakes, a cinamon and spice table centrepiece decoration, 4 chisel handles from my eldest son, a certificate for one days labour digging up and replacing an old blocked rain water pipe etc etc.

Each was kind of fun because someone had made an effort.

regards
Alan

I quite like the day itself. Who doesn't like presents? But the 'season' p1sses me off immensely and I'm pleased as punch that I don't have to go out side the house until it's all over, this year. I don't think I've heard a single Christmas song yet. yay!

Looking forward to a lovely meal (cooked by me), presents, playing with the little'n, then sneaking off for a 'nap'. :)

Roger you miserable old beggar, sit back and enjoy a few single malts. Although this year there will be NO CIGARS as I will have been without the weed for 7, going in 8 weeks [-o<

A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL :ho2

Cheers

Mike

Apart from the shopping I like Christmas as generally we have a big family get together.
This will be the first time for about 40 years that we wont be having any little ones with us - our elder Grandchildren are 16 & 14 and the younger set (5&2) are in Canada :( - but we will have our 91 & 90 year old mothers with us (if I manage to get up and back to Yorkshire OK mid week?).

I am not really a New Years Eve person - I always feel a bit sad despite the Malt (or because of it?) - I know you are supposed to get excited about another New Year - I just think it's another gone and I am getting older! :(

Happy Christmas everyone (I am quite cheerful really!)

Rod :)

Rod - depends where you're going in Yorkshire, here in sunny Huddersfield we have getting on for a foot of snow that landed today

And yes, Roger, you are a miserable b*st*rd! Have a glass of mulled wine and a mince pie

I don't think I've ever looked forward to Christmas. Maybe when I was a kid, but certainly not as an adult.

The result has been that Christmas is never actually as bad as I anticipate and so I end up having a reasonably good time. I'm not into presents, it seems ridiculous to buy something because one has to.

I like the idea of "it has to be made". Excellent. I have (almost) finished something I intended to give to SWMBO, but I don't suppose she wants it now.

Everything I want cannot be bought.

Yes,i think it is more appreciated,as the recipient always feel that you have taken the time to make something especially for the.
Most the gifts for friends, and some family i have made, pens, xmas trees, clocks, vases, bowls etc. They always seem to go down well, sometimes with a request to make one or two after :D

I must say that now I've got 2 young uns xmas is again quite an exciting time - the look on their faces is worth every penny.
Given that it is not only likely that Christ wasn't even born on Dec 25th nor in the year 0 A - it's not surprising that many people think it's just a commercialised waste of time.

PS, now we have proof - Cowell's not the only one who can manipulate the charts :)

My advice would be to give her the gift anyway, even if (worst case) you are headed for the divorce courts there is no need to be mortal enemies, especially if there are short people involved. Remember in WW1 the two sides still played football on no mans land on xmas day.

failing that my inner cynic advises that you sell it and spent the money on yourself ( had i been arround in 1914 my inner cynic would probably have used the football match as cover to launch a suprise assault on the hun) :D

Thanks we are still well chuffed, because I suppose we never thought it would happen. The old excuses "I have not got the will power" or "I will get very moody" "Why should I do it I enjoy it to much"

Cheers

My best ever christmas was 2 or 3 years ago when we flew to India and back-packed around for 2 or 3 weeks over christmas and New Year. No cards or presents at all, no shopping, no in laws.....and a gorgeous curry for christmas dinner (all you could eat for about £4.00, including drinks). All the locals stopped us in the street to wish us happy christmas............complete strangers would come up to us and shake our hands, wishing us well for the New Year......and don't forget this is a predominantly Hindu community.

As an atheist, christmas holds no deeper meaning for me (it is, after all, a pagan mid-winter ceremony hijacked by the christians), and I am utterly sick and tired of the shopping and excess, and trivia, that comes with christmas UK-style. I loath christmas lists, and pointless cards from people who don't communicate for the rest of the year. I really resent the waste that comes of thoughtless token presents..........and would rather have no present than a silly token that I don't need.

I do, however, enjoy getting the family together, and village friends together.......particularly for the ad-hoc socials. That, for me, is the real joy of the christmas season.

Now that is the way to spend Christmas.

Xmas is like a huge punctuation in the year. I wonder what we would do if one year just rolled in to the next? Despite not being particularly enamoured with the Xmas event I do wonder what life would be like without it? The economny would fail for a start
