Whilst searching forum for info on TCT regrinding service, came across old thread about lack of handsaw doctors, and difficulty of reshaping teeth with a hand file. My efforts in this direction have been much aided by this tip-

Use another blade of desired tpi as a template; HSS hacksaw blades, or impulse hardened blade or bandsaw blade are good as not readily cut by file, and old ones will do if scroungeable! Put template blade in vise with saw and hand file saw till it matches the template. The angles may not be exactly as you want, but now you have a set of regular points/valleys to work from.

Yeah, 'tis a helpful one, that. I've done it myself many a time - did we neglect to mention it? Tsk. #-o Good catch, Ivan.

Cheers, Alf

I first saw this tip put forward by Robert Wearing. He says that it will pretty much wreck the template and the file, but that this is cheap for a recut.

In the modern age of DTP there's a much easier, more versatile and cheaper way.

Simply computer print a template and glue it on the saw.

Here's some I prepared earlier:

(note to computer geeks - the postscript can be edited to generate progressive teeth patterns too)
