Apologies if there's already a thread on this - I looked, but couldn't see one.

Anywho, it was a 30 min. program following the construction of a windsor chair.

Did anyone else see this? At one point, the maker used what appeared to be a pull-saw, and I was wondering why? What advantage did it have over a "normal" saw cutting on the push stroke? Or is it just personal preference?

Thanks

Yes, I watched it last night. Enjoyable, not least because of the absence of commentary or music.

I was intrigued by his use of new and old technology and loved his customised air mask (defies description - you have to watch on BBC4). On the saw, it looked like a pruning saw but was probably one of the Japanese saws - they all cut on the pull, rather than the push stroke, as with Western saws. I assume it was just personal preference.

Only disappointment was his use of an electric drill and forstner bits versus a good old brace and bits. I'll forgive him using an arbortech instead of gouges/drawknife for the seat hollow. :)

I missed the end of it thanks to a sodding power cut! did he finish it? I saw upto him using the giant pencil sharpener with the lathe  loved the lack of yacking and music but it did have a few arty farty camera angles and would have liked to nosey around his workshop at the tools etc
But enjoyed what i saw

The artiness comes to the fore in everything. How often have we read that books are supposedly brilliantly written? beautiful prose, but awful story - or listened to a dreadful piece of music that is highly rated because it's difficult to play?

For a set of films supposedly about crafts, I think it's really all about the cameraman.

Still, I think a set of films about detailed craft instruction would also leave
most of the nation's viewers cold.

Just hope Simon Cowell doesn't want to have " Wood Idol" "Britain's Got Turners" or "The X-Cut Saw Factor...............not to mention "I'm a Carpenter Get Me Out Of Here"
It could have been worse by being a radio show.

We've had two series of that with Monty Don - "Mastercrafts" and "Real Craft".

Both pretty poor, IMHO, and very much the contest+backstory+journey you imply...
