So I had my first woodturning class last night and after 2 1/2 short hours (felt more like 1 hour!!!) I think I may be hooked!!!

The fun of taking a rough square piece of timber and creating a finished product (albeit a very dodgy looking one in my case) without using ten different tools and setups is just amazing. I just wish I had a lathe to practice on until next weeks class now!!

Great Stuff Mike,

- Show some pics !! - i ran a little thread about mine, with a few pics, great to get even more advice from the experts on here !!!

I start back next Monday - on the Improvers course. Can't wait to get back.

Having someone show you how to hold / use tools is so much better than reading any book.

I think I would be embarassed to show what I created last night - just lots of coves and beads with flat spots and chunks missing where I made a mistake!!!

Maybe next week

Hey Mike, don't get embarrassed about any of your work, we was all there at one time or another.

When I began with a cheap Clarke lathe all I had was the drive centre, and a cup chuck. Decided between centres was boring so tried to use the cup chuck. #-o .

It was almost a week of and on before I gave up and joined a club, I just couldn't stop the piece of wood coming out of the chuck and orbiting the garage. It still happens occasionally now.

Don't be fooled into thinking that the stuff you see on here is all that is done. Most of us don't show our disasters. Come to think of it maybe that would make a good thread.

Not at all... definately not ... fire it on up here.... almost without exception, the comments and encouragement you'll get are extremely valuable and very constructive.
8) 8) Perhaps it wouldn't even be out of order to say it 'speeds up' the learning process a little..., the advice I mean.

First thing I put up - same day, got 5 PM's from different guys here.... Thats like having 5 lecturers all advising .... invaluable !

Take the plunge and lets see ! 8) 8)

Great that you're loving it ! :D

too right - i have recently turned a beautiful spalted beech bowl lovely and thin (arround 1/4 ins walls) with an interesting "design feature" in that it is open at both ends - yep went straight through the bottom on the last cut  maybe i can claim its a really big bangle ;)

this sort of thing happens to us all , more often than most of us would like to admit.
