I spent a very pleasant and educational day with Richard in Leicester today.

The drive was straight forward, only missing the entrance to the yard at the last turn (twice).

As Dave said, Richard's unit is small but nicely setup.

Within a few minutes I was turning beads, first with a gouge and then with with a skew! I had a couple of catches on the last bead, but that was entirely my fault...

Then I moved on to making a box, loosely based on a design in Mark Baker's book, from a maple blank. I had the option of a goblet, but I've done one before and didn't want to copy everything Dave did...

After lunch we finished the box, and moved onto making an ash bowl - the neatest one I've ever made :)

All in all I had a good day. Richard patiently repeating and explaining techniques I wasn't getting.

I came away with a lovely little box and bowl and lots of knowledge and more and better techniques which hopefully I remember for a while. I'm sure my turning will be better as a result.

I really hope Richard's a success with his tuition.

Thanks for a great day Richard :)

Pete

PS I didn't have a camera with me - hopefully Richard will post some photos later.

There must be something about that entrance.

Richard is very good at this, I used to teach (micro electronics) and know the frustrations of working with students. ](*,)

Shame on you sir, you should know that a camera is an essential woodworking tool. #-o

glad to hear you had a good day :) richard is a top fella- I also missed the entrance richard had to stand at the road end to get my attention

Ok guys, here's the pictures of Pete's day with me.

I structured it very similar to Dave's day except Pete made a box rather than a goblet.

We started with spindle work which I feel gives a good base to build upon and confidence in this area soon breeds confidence in other areas of turning. This was apparent with the skew. Pete pulled a bit of a face when I suggested it but with a few pointers he was soon planeing and rolling beads without too much problem. He only got 2 catches when rolling beads!!!

Please note the visor in use!!!!

After the spindle excersises Pete made a box. He claimed to never have made a box before and then proceeded to cut a perfect fitting lid on his first cut   :D !!

After a spot of lunch Pete made a bowl. A nice simple shape with a nice curve.

He power sanded (whilst wearing a dust mask  )

He then reversed the bowl and turned the chucking spigot into a decorative foot:

I think that the day went well and Pete said that he had enjoyed him self and learned plenty. He also left with a nice Ash bowl and a Maple box to show for it.

Next is Paul J on the 28th of March.

Cheers,

Richard
