A snippet in the news the other day got me thinking. Until hearing this item, I had not realised that airlines adopted a policy of not sitting unaccompanied children next to a male. The definition of unaccompanied can include children whose parents are seated elsewhere on the plane.

My initial reaction was 'what a good idea' but then I realised exactly what this policy was saying. It was saying that all men are potential paedophiles including me and I do find that assumption rather offensive. It is in the same vein as 'all hoodies are evil', ' all teenagers are criminals' etc.

What do others think?

Along the same lines as 'all photographers may be a paedophile.' I can no longer photograph my own children at school events. If I bring out a camera in a public park, to photograph my own children, some parents get a look of horror on their face and grab their children and run.  This line of thinking seems to have become prevalent in the last 5-6 years. I used to photograph my kids everywhere; now I feel as if I'll get lynched if I do.

Well looking on the bright side, it means you don't have to elbow the brat next to you who is annoying you. Seriously though I once took an underwater video camera to the local pool and was told that I couldn't use it during public sessions as it was an infringenment of their privacy! I only wanted to test it! Luckily a friend of mine hired one so we took it there.

I have to agree with you Roger as being a black man  :) .

Coming home from work I use to get women grabbing they hand bags when I was walking home or on the bus and still get it some times

Gary

I think you are right about the media but when they get it wrong
They should get a big slap on the wrist to say the lest

It bloody annoys me that some "social scientist" regards ME as a potential criminal because I carry a knife in my pocket (just as I have since I was about 7 or 8 I am just turned 46  )
Or what about all the law abiding responsible sport shooters who were by asosciation stigmatised as deviant social misfits because of dunblane and had there weapons cofiscated by the govt? What has that done to reduce violent crime??

That has touched upon a particular bugbear of mine; I used to be a keen pistol shooter (well, all forms of shooting, but pistols especially) and was a member of a couple of clubs. Then what happened? A bunch of politically correct 'puritans' (the definition of a puritan being someone who always harbours the nagging fear that someone somewhere might be enjoying themselves) stopped at nothing to ensure that my favourite sport was branded 'evil' and had it banned. My clubs went out of business and my colleagues were forced to surrender their pistols, not a single one of them was a criminal or someone you might look sideways at on the bus and think was a bit dodgy (unlike the lunatic that caused it all in the first place).
The system of firearms licensing could have done with tightening, but instead of looking at ways to prevent future tragedies they just violated the rights of all the law-abiding citizens that enjoyed legitimate pistol shooting. Funnily enough, removing firearms from the hands of the decent law-abiding shooters of this country has *not* halted gun crime commited with unlicensed firearms illegally held by criminals. What a surprise!
Villification in the media has a huge role to play in these disgusting witch-hunts, I used to consider myself the sort of person who would step up to someone in trouble or try to help, but I dare not approach a lost child in a shopping center as I would doubtless be immediately branded a deviant.
When the streets are no longer safe to walk and no activity is permitted outside of a government monitored facility, the brainless minority responsible for identifying the glut of publicised moral outrages will look at each other (through the armoured glass of their sealed homes) and ask each other what happened.

There are no 100% certainties in this world, but to live without risk (however small) is to exist, not live.
And similarly to mr spanton, I have carried a knife since I was a small boy as it is incredibly useful, I do not tend to go around stabbing people, but I do get funny looks from otherwise intelligent people when I am able to pull out a penknife and solve a problem within seconds instead of having to run indoors and raid the kitchen for a suitable tool.

Oh good heavens, I'm going to get a reputation for rants on here aren't I? I do apologise.

Vormulac.

I think it was Albert (Dryden) put the wind up them, he shot dead a planning inspector who turned up with an eviction order/bulldozers etc  They just want it so as the police and army is the only ones with access to a firearms weapon, but even then its a shambles.
I know what you mean vormulac I get funny looks when I use my knife to open those drink containers for the kids if we're out somewhere like this nutcase could run amock and STAB US ALL   They think like that as theyve been taught to by the aunt nancy bbc, guardian etc

Well I think we are getting a bit diverted from Roger's original post.

1. Yes I object to being branded a a Paed, especially as I find children VERY difficult. I have none of my own (although as I get older I do actually see the downside of that) although (and probably because - although having a wife with MS doesn't exactly help) I used to teach Physics and Chemistry to 11-16s in another life, and I was Albert The Magic Rabbit in my spare time for more years than I care to remember. Sad but true.

There were three "although"s in that sentence. Bad, very bad. :S

2. I am DELIGHTED if little brats are kept as far away from me as possible on aeroplanes. Or any other form of public transport, for that matter.

It's midnight (not a sound from the pavement) and I think I've probably had a glass of Rioja toomany to be writing this stuff.

Goodnight all.

Modern life as produced quite a number of these sort of problems.
Innocent people can sometimes not go to football matches because some minority have misbehaved and match attendances are banned.
No drinking in public places is another owing to the rowdy element.
etc.etc etc.
One day the situation will most probably go the half circle again and we can then all enjoy our lives without others having made restrictions because of the behavior of others. .
Perhaps some political parties shoud be banned because of their bad histories!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tend to agree with much that has been said on this thread, tho' I didn't know about the aircraft seating arrangement.....keep me well away from kids on aeroplanes, 'specially ones under 6 months  . I too have always carried a pocket knife since I was about 10, even took one to school  and remember playing 'splits' with it. I for one don't intend to stop carrying my knife as the routine has been engrained over the last 40 odd years - Rob

I have had a crap life over the last five+ years. But what always brings a smile to my face is when the wife and I are in the supermarket. She picks up some brocolly, I then take it off of her because I refuse to pay for all that stork, take out the knife to cut it off. The old dears faces. Shock, horror, there's a murderer in our midst.   Love it.

Shortly after LOML Jr was born we decided to go to Amsterdam for a weekend away, taking the baby with us. When we checked in for the flight, BA informed us that the flight was full and that I would be sitting at the front of the plane, LOML in the middle, and the two-month-old baby on her own at the back.

When we pointed out that neither the baby nor her neighboring passengers were going to be happy about this, we got BA's usual response - a shrug. Only got it sorted with the help of the attendant on board.

To be honest. I think the media has a lot to answer for.

The media has almost everything to answer for. And I speak as a 30-year veteran in the media :(

If I'm doing a stir fry, I quite often pick up just discarded stalks and buy a bag of them. That gets some odd looks from the people on the tills, I can tell you.

Far more tasty than the flowery bits, though.

You wouldn't care to post some photos, would you Steve?

Actually, I don't think I have any. But I do have a video of me performing at the Magic Circle in London in Febraury 1975. I was 17, and I was a finalist in the Young Magician of the Year comp. I did a cabaret act then, but Albert came later. All in all I did magic for nearly 30 years and I got through 3 Alberts. Or was it four, I forget.

My mum might have some photos from my very early days, I'll try to remember to ask her, if you like.

Steve,
you have a video? I am sure with your new found skills you could get it up on Youtube somehow.

Andy
