Hi I am new to UK workshop am this is my first post. I recently found this vice in the back garden of my daughters new house. It a appears to be in good condition under a thick layer of rust! Anyway l reckon then only way forward is to strip in right down remove the rust and reassemble. My problem is getting the guide bars out of the front jaw. Does anybody know how they are held in?
Cheers

I think they are pressed in. If that is the case the only way to remove is to put them in a hydralic press.
Why do you need to remvove them? I would leave them and clean round them.

I stripped my vice but left those in place

IF you got them out, you would be needing heat and a lot of pressure to get them back in

Hi, and welcome to the forum!

I'd agree with the other three answers. Leave 'em in!

P.S Nice find, though. What sort of lummox leaves a good vice like that lying around outside?

Thanks for your quick replies, My thinking was to stick them in my lathe and clean them with some emery. However taking into account the replies l am going to leave them in and go around em.
Cheers

As to what sort of lummox leaves a vice like that lying around, it is same one who also leaves a record no2 metalwork vice along side it!!

I restored a Record 52 1/2 not so long ago; definitely not a good idea to mess with the guide bars, press fit and the ends on mine were lightly peened over also. I de-rusted mine by filling a plastic baby bath with a water and acid solution (acid was a W5 limescale remover from Lidl or Aldi), the solution was fairly dilute but I found it very effective for rust removal, especially if heated up also. Once the solution started to react with the corrosion I would wire brush the guide bars to loosen the rust and expose clean metal. Worked a treat, although it is messy and probably best done outdoors, if weather permits.

I had a record vice with bent bars. I don't know what model though.
I took the bars out and got the blacksmith to straighten them hydraulically.

They wound out with a bit of of help from Mr Stillson.
The thread is very fine and takes a lot of turns to remove the bars.

Which vice ?

I thought these bars were pressed into place, not threaded

Den.
It is record with quick release and has the two round section bars and the flat spring loaded middle bar that swivels with the QR lever. The end piece on the bars needs to come off, which connects the two round bars and houses the qr bar end.
My bars were bent by a previous owner causing binding. after lots of wet n dry and wd40 it was apparent that the binding was caused by the bars being bent.
I tried the stillsons and out they came. The thread is very fine and slow and the casting very deep meaning lots of turns to remove them.

In which case, I stand corrected

Here is a picture of my vice which shows marking around the bars in question which to me, indicate that this isn't supposed to come out easily

I could of course be totally wrong about this as well (standard caveat :))

All the ones I have had to bits have been screwed.....

This leads us to an obvious question then - how can you tell if a bar is a press fit or threaded without taking it out ?

I dunno if I fancy hanging from a pair of 3ft stilsons to see if there's any give ....

I can confirm that mine is 52 1/2 record and threaded. The last thread on each bar is visible.
They appear to be showing marks on the faces as if they were pressed or swayged, perhaps to tidy the bar end.

And I don't own 3ft stilsons.only 10-15-18 inch.
