Grub screw for locking insert into place in Supernova chuck

I have a supernova that came with the Jubilee lathe that I have recently aquired.

It came with a right hand thread insert so its fine for working over the bed. However, as I would like to turn some larger items I would also like to be able to use it on the outboard side and being on a budget have simply bought a LH insert for it.

There is a small tapped hole to take a grub screw of some sort to secure it - well at least I think that is what its for????

Is that what the procedure is? Don't really want to try it out without being sure, don't think I would enjoy a spinning chuck to the face!

Sounds like it's a grub screw alright. Did one come in the box with the LH insert?

Does it tighten in the direction of rotation, though? If so you should be ok.... (please correct me if I'm wrong!)

It's a standard grub screw, lefty loosely, remove it then unscrew your insert which may need a bit of grunt to get it to move in the first place.

Good to hear that it's actually a 6mm (presumably an M6). My Supernova came with the grub screw but after a month or two it worked its way loose and disappeared into the wood shavings, never to be seen again. I shall now fetch a bag of spares as recommended.

How funny...I was just thinking to myself...ah those guys want to try AHC in Camberley (5 miles from me). It's a brilliant old style hardware store (four candles style with brown overalls) and they've never failed to sell me the fixing I've needed no matter how weird.

Bunners in Montgomery is just the same. They have a basement (or more correctly a cellar) which is just a rabbit's warren of nuts, screws, bolts, threaded bar, locks etc etc and they can usually find something that fits whatever it is I need. The place smells vaguely of paraffin but, regrettably the staff do not wear brown coats. Otherwise it is something straight out of the 1940/50s.

LOL....I love the idea of a place smelling "vaguely of paraffin". It should also have items and paraphernalia made of brass but with no obvious function loosely scattered around on high shelves with an occasional completely rusted hurricane lantern!

I miss little shops like that a treasure trove and the owners knew exactly where everything was and if they did not have the exact piece you wanted there was always something that would do the job just the same or even better.

You always know a place is quality when the countertop was so worn from use that not only has any veneer (probably formica given its age) gone but it's worn right into the underlying wood with a friendly groove.
