I got a phone call from my wife. She goes to the boot sale every Saturday, and this has led to some variable results - you may remember the Frankenplane a few weeks ago.

Today she wanted to know if I wanted a Millers Falls plane she had found. Yes please, I said. She said there was also an old Record there. Did I want it. "T5" I heard the seller shout. So, of course, I said yes, not knowing what state either plane would be in.

Well, here they are.

£40 the pair...

The T5 has a cracked tote and no side handle, a little light pitting on the sole but nothing else apart from some staining. The MF really just needs a good clean.

Happy boy. Next week she has promised to take me with her - so there'll be nothing there.

Nothing like the Master's T5 yet, but after a quick clean - literally a wipe with WD40 and a bit of a polish and some new woodwork, here's how it looks:

I'm not sure if I want to polish up the sole and wings. There are a few pits and stains, but that's character.

And it makes very nice shavings, even on some awkward maple that was frustrating everything else. It really is a very nice plane to use. It has made friends already...

Perhaps they'll breed.

Now all I need is that side handle. Any ideas? I don't have a lathe or any turning skills - the tote and knob were made by a guy in the north-east who trades on ebay under the name nico_pasty - anyone got any ideas who he is? He was offering 3-knob sets for T5s at one time, but seems to have disappeared.

Looks very nice, Dick - and yes, I did notice the Philly/Waka style gloat of the Lie Nielsen brush in the background

Cheers

As a fudge, you can use a knob. The thread for the side handle is (IIRC) the same as the knob/tote thread, in which case my website may be of interest:

Hi, Smudger

I have some Frog screws thay you can have to make a knob, or I have a tap and die so I can make you a lenght of rod with a thread on, just let me know what you want.

Brilliant. I got two results today - a 1950s LCC shooting board and the promise of a lathe and some cherry to make a handle. Should be interesting as I haven't touched a lathe since I was 12...

The T5 works well on the board but really needs the handle. I'll put some pictures of the board up later, it's an interesting sort of construction I've never seen before.

A question - should I use a straight cutter or radius the corners?

If you are going to use it mainly on the shooting board, I would go with a straight blade. You can use a cambered blade but it means fiddling about with the lateral adjustment lever to make sure that the right bit of the blade is cutting.

Cheers

Thanks, Paul. Funny how things make blindingly obvious sense when someone else explains them to you!

And of course it's much easier to sharpen.
