Good boy looking for a home

Earlier this week we got a call from the rescue in Bosnia that SWMBO went out to help, one of the dogs they had rehomed here needed to be picked up urgently, when she got there she found out that the previous night the families 13yr old daughter came down stairs and decided to kiss the dog goodnight, unfortunately Loki was asleep and reacted out of fright resulting in a hospital trip and stitches to the chin for the girl, the parents don't blame Loki at all, they recognise that he reacted out of fear/shock and do not wish him to be put down, we have taken plenty of photos and videos whilst he has been here and his behaviour has been perfect, all he wants to do is cuddle, we took him to the vets who agree that the bite seems out of character/ due to the shock of being woken up that way, the police are also happy that he is not aggressive and no further action is required.
The problem is that if he doesn't find a home here he will be taken back to Bosnia on the 21st, he was only a couple of months old when he came here so he won't have experienced how cold it will be when he gets there and he will freeze. If we had space and finances I would consider keeping him, he is absolutely gorgeous.

That’s a very very sweet dog indeed.

My own dog bit me a couple of years ago, I was on the sofa really tired and leant forward over her and she bit me on the nose, blood everywhere.

She was a very lovely dog (sadly she died on 17th Oct, see my other thread), but she wasn’t terribly domesticated and was an anxious dog, she couldn’t be entirely trusted, we used to make sure she was awake before getting too near her, especially not our faces. She had full training and was trained to have a soft bite, but we just had to careful.

It sounds like Loki, being a rescue probably didn’t have any training as a pup to have a soft mouth so when taken unawares reacted with a hard bite. The family must be devastated for both for the daughter and losing a lovely dog.

They are pretty gutted on both counts, they have only had him since August so he still has a lot to learn, biggest difficulty is he doesn't like being left, plus he's not keen on the crate but we don't know him enough to leave him alone with our 2 so if we go out he gets put in the crate, which means he's getting a couple hours crate time between SWMBO going to work and me getting home at 12 leaving me feeling too guilty to put him back in the crate to go out to the lathe in the afternoons so I've not been in the workshop for a week.

That sounds to me like you could give him a perfect home, with just the sort of understanding needed. I don't imagine you'd be much more than half an hour away from Stig

Dogs and children don't mix, and it's not usually the dogs fault.

Never surprise a dog not even the one you've had for 10 yrs.

No reason that he won't be a wonderful companion, if you treat him right.

That sounds to me like you could give him a perfect home, with just the sort of understanding needed. I don't imagine you'd be much more than half an hour away from Stig

Unfortunately my wife is still too upset to even think about another dog at the moment.

But I do hope he gets re homed soon

Good on you Stigmorgan, hope you find a home! Rescued dogs make great companions, we have had nine through the years.

The rescue centre may have found him a place with a lady who has 3 of his litter mates.
