I have just been made redundant

However, I have been in exile in England for 12 years and this gives me the opportunity to return to Gods Own County....Cornwall. \/

I have a couple of niggle however. My redundancy will cover me for a few months as I have a large family down there (5 kids) but need to find rented accommodation ( with either a decent space for a shed / workshop or one already in place) and a job in that order. If any of you Kernow woodworkers have knowledge of such a place ideally from St Austell south to Lizard could you advise. We envisage moving as of mid August. Ideally looking for a three bedroom house in the middle of nowhere, 1/2 an acre with barn for a workshop for about £500 a month :lol: :lol: :lol: (just daydreaming)

Fortunately have offers from the kids to tide us over so not desperate but thought you guys might have contacts.

P.S. Any good turning clubs etc there?

Sue and I are over the moon about it Paul odd as that may seem. We both have cat in our blood and always seem to land on our feet. Having reached the age where we are both going ash blond (grey) we have done most of the things that we had ambitions for so are easily pleased and we have a large family (19 at the last count) behind us + some good friends so it's just another adventure. Rather have a 30' boat and disappear but haven't worked out how to run a lathe and get my hands on spare wood.....(+SWMBO doesn't go along with that one)

Pete, mixed reactions here, sorry it's another trauma but pleased you are treating it as something positive.

Make sure the new place has a big barn, we could put up with a bash in Cornwall for a few days.

Wow Pete, thats not the most pleasant thing to have to go through ( the 'redundancy' thing ), but what a fantastic way you have of dealing with it, sseing it as the catalyst of something new and very positive.

By approaching this 'latest life-adventure' with such a determind and positive mindset, you're basically bound to make it a success

Although I've never had the pleasure to meet you ( yet.. and hopefully that will change at sometime down the line 8) ), by being here, we all share a 'common bond', and I wish you and all of your family the very best for the the future and hope you get yourselves established 'back home' in what is after all, a fabulous part of the world.

Good on yer Pete! Three firms I have worked for went broke, (funny that!) so me and the wife sold up and moved to Wales and I started my own business. Nobody was gonna make me redundant again!
There are times Pete when you need fate to give you a push! The very best to you.

Thanks for all the thoughts guys, must admit I never thought I'd be happy about redundancy but I am. I'm also lucky in having a good missus and kids who are extremely supportive. Took us nearly an hour to come to a decision :lol:

Must confess the thought of being able to access some reallt good turners in Cornwall helps to soften the blow as well. Maybe, if I get good enough I might be able to make a bit of money with it though I doubt I'll have the skill or courage needed to go full time at it.

Regarding the idea off a bash Chas, if I get the right place you're on. Unless something special happens it is unlikely to be 'till next year tho as we will probably be moving down mid August.

I got made redundant in 91 and vowed it wouldn't happen again.Been self employed ever since.Turned out to be a blessing in disguise.Good look to you.Cornwall is a lovely part of the world.

i think you have more than proved that you're capable.

I wish!! I would need (apart from skill) a better lathe, a proper workshop, decent dust extraction and public liability insurance. I would also have to use proper wood to teach. :shock: I do have the Cert ED :lol:
Seriously, I haven't been turning as long as most of you guys and I really need to keep going on the learning curve before I could even consider it. I look at the things that Duncan, Tam & Mark produce not to mention Chas and others and I reckon another few years and maybe I might be able to but not yet.
