Custard, I'm not sure if this is one of those things that had just gone unsaid through the thread because it's thought obvious but non-porous materials will glue with many adhesives much better when their surface has been roughened. This technique is widely used in a few other areas where an adhesive (or paint binder) doesn't have a particular affinity for a material, often a plastic or a resin, providing a 'surface key' that allows the formation of a mechanical bond where a chemical bond doesn't occur or is too weak for the application.
