A little package arrived in the post today, so I thought I'd show you all. Granted it's no LN or LV but each has it's place and this little chap is destined for some hard work over the coming weeks. Just need to learn how to hone a curved edge

Well it looks small but perfectly formed. 8)

So what are you making that needs a thumb sized plane?

That would be for the final shape carving on the top of the Les Paul. This will not be a quick job and my initial love of this little plane may take a beating

It's an 18mm round sole Ibex thumb plane. As found in the musical instrument makers section of tools with those lovely people at Classic Hand Tools

As some say, size isn't everything
As you'll want quite a tight radius rather than just a camber, may find it easiest presenting the edge side on, or at least with a pronounced skew, and roll your wrist through the stroke. Easier with an oilstone rather than a (softer) waterstone.

Hi,

Nice plane! I have been toying with making one, got most of the design worked out, just need the time to make it.

I like to see one being used, I can't imagine it in use. Maybe that's my heavy handed technique.

I'll see if I can get a pic of it in action for you. You can either use it with your thumb on top of the plane in the hollow or with your forefinger on top. I think LN do a version which has an extended piece at the back which sits in the palm of your hand allowing your finger and thumb to rest on either side
