I cant wait any longer for the weather to improve so had a delivery of sycamore yesterday and have some black walnut knocking around and going to start with this one.

WA that was only the old Paint shop Pro 9 used.

OK, I am already getting naughty design changes already, found a bit of American Ash laying on the table saw from last year so after going into WS at 9.30 and taking over 90 minutes to get things straight in the workshop I got this far.

I cut a longitude saw cut twice and then I intend to clean the rebate out with a 12mm rouuter bit. I have found some Purple heart which will be used for the intarsia effect.

So after lunch I went back out to the WS instead of having my usual siesta.

Lovely weather, (and I thought the season was ready to go this morning)

Cut out the waste of the rebates (dadoes) with router on table.

And then made my first mistake of the season. I omitted to do the vertical rebates and glued the outside horizontal contrast colours before doing those vertical rebates.

At my age I shall have to start making a progress instruction sheet to keep me on track in future.

Not a disaster but box is going to turn out a different pattern than planned.

Just hope that ash does not move too much when you bring it inside if its been sitting in a cold workshop since last year

Or is thay why its on the Hob, quick bit of kiln drying

See your rust problem hasn't gone away then DW :D

I suppose someday down the line I could always put a sheet of chipboard on the table top and have a new surface. Don't know what happens to the fence, but I know this has been done and mentioned here some years ago.

Jason, the box would still be coming indoors one day and I think because the item is small, movement if any is also proportionate, and previous years nothing untoward has happened.

in the mood for what - having a runny nose?

rebated the rear side of carcass pieces, hoping to avoid any twist occurring, and inserted purple heart decorative strips each side to balance.

Might get a whole day in the WS today, household duties light, and weather off putting for gardening work.

For those members who have not seen the jig I use to make the mitred corners, showing again.

I use three lots of hand clamps to make sure timber does not get moved by the blade and also one clamp acts as a stop as well.

I then glue up the carcass but never use clamps just masking tape, I find it goes together square more easily, clamps can pull the box out of shape.

Prepared strips for the box lid and glued ready to make aperture.

Progress delayed this morning, dandylions growing, and then I saw a neighbour in his garden and had a chat, then got him to come into my workshop and help me manoevure that bit of sycamore I purchased this week (1.6cu.ft.lump) through the bandsaw, took off a 4" width ready for some action later this coming week.

Should the bottom of the box have gone into the groove BEFORE gluing up?

No.

It is a tissue box, and there will be two sliding closers which ride in the slots and a space has been created already for these parts.

WA

The polythene stops the exuding glue from sticking to the make up board.

Ah, got it. Its goping to have a fixed top and two bottom pieces each approx 1/3rd the base that slide in, can see what the notch is for now.

Jason, thats right.

Interesting day yesterday,
Some progress on the box, the lid has now been cut for its aperture and then glued but will have to now wait for edges to be rounded over plus rebating edges to drop on top of carcass.

Couple of neighbours also called in as mentioned but we cut off the top crust of this newly baked loaf (made by misses) and had a feast.

Finally that weather returned again in the afternoon.

See you again soon I hope.

Big problems today.

Got the top fitted with just the aperture to round over after glue as set.

Then my problems started.
A friend of a friend told me his friend had got a son who used to be interested in turning but he had left home three years ago on the marriage trail and left his turning equipment in the hands of his father to store for a later day. However his interest has now wained and his father was saddled with loss of storeage space in his garage for the motorcar.
So disposal was the order of the day, and I am the lucky recipient.

The problem is carrying the tools into my workshop has overloaded my knee joints and I am stuck with the shop now in a mess and unworkable until it can be tidied up, some of which I will have to sell on because I already have one lathe in the shop.
(so one yellow lathe and a set of 6 chisels will be going up for resale when I am mobile again)
