hi all, a question for the budding gardeners out there.
bottom half of my garden is lest say rough odd blade of grass here and there but the rest weeds.
what is the best way to turn it into a lawn. turf is to expensive and digging it probably kill me lol.
what are my options.

andy

How big an area is it ?

Spray the area to get rid of the weeds then get a rotavator in to do the hard work. Once done rake and level it then sow grass seed, August & Sept are good months for this unless the ground is very dry like it is where I am at the moment.

Steve

bit shy of rotorvator as theres tree stump and there were conifers along 1 side but have ripped them out .
will have look at hire prices
thanks

is there no access for a small (one that goes through a gateway ) excavator to take out the conifer roots ?

other than that an extra weetabix and a mattock for root removal

Steve :)

lol. been through that wen took conifers out lol. the prob is an old ash tree stump right in middle prob 10 inch dia,
size of garden to be grassed is 7mx13m.

According to the head gardener at Buck House you take a meadow and mow it for 200 years!

Roy.

With all the no-goes, chuck some wild flower seeds over it and let nature take it's course?

A stump grinder is about %0 quid a day to hire. It is on my list of things to do, but am digging a patio at the moment. It seems like a neverending task.

What's (the bulk of) the ground covered with at the moment?

Just start mowing. Set it high. Start with a strimmer or brush cutter if necessary. Level any bumps. Leave cuttings in place except perhaps for the first round, if there is a lot of it.
Quite quickly all will be grass. It will invade bare spaces unaided but a bit of seed will speed this up. Most weeds won't survive the mowing. The ones that do you either put up with (can be attractive - daisies, clover etc) or treat with selective weedkiller
Ash stump - drill as many holes in it as you can be bothered to. They'll trap water and speed up the rot. Or if it's still sprouting you could let it carry on and grow your own timber. Next year for pea sticks, the year after for bean poles, another year or two for tool handles. etc. etc.

Lawn?
Lay concrete and build a massive shed with a flat roof, then have a space to sit on top of it and drink beer.
Lawns are like garages full of cars, a waste of space.
Chunko'.

Dig up the weeds, use a metal rake to get the soil somewhat aerated, lay a mix of grass seed down (some fast growing, with long lasting) and try to cover with hay or some other light cover.
