Saw a sticker on a lamp post for a garage sale yesterday so popped along and got this little lot for a fiver. 8)

tools.jpg

15 nice irons inc full set of 8; Record Imp vice, King Dick wrench, Isaac Greaves OHBMC and this odd plane that I have not seen before:

I am going to pop down and boil an egg and by the time I get back hopefully Alf will have posted all info from the exact hill the iron ore came from to how many grandchilren the last owner had..... :p

handle looks wrong; there is a faint four digit number on the cap iron; no adjuster and no frog adjuster except the two screws. Odd side profile.

Regards,
martin

S'gonna be hard boiled... I'm all planed out at the mo' - spent all day so far writing up the combination planes and feel a bit mazey. All I can say is the side profile is a dead-ringer for a Bailey Tool Co one, but that doesn't mean someone else didn't use it ('cos they probably did)

Cheers, Alf

P.S. As ever, you suck. :p

You do suck Martin!

I could look for a lifetime around here and not find the tiniest percent of what you do! Looks like one of these days I need to let you know what plow irons I am missing for that old Greenslade wedge-arm plow. You seem to be tripping over them!

The plane looks really different. Cannot really tell in the picture, but the sides appear to me to come up from the back to a corner before the typical curves going down to the front knob?

And that guide or whatever it is in lieu of an adjustment lever is, uh, stout!

Never seen such a plane. What with the lever cap screw being profiled like it is suggests Scottish perhaps?

Take care, Mike

Hi Martin. In the top photo there looks to me like there is something embossed in the plane iron. Can't see it well enough from the photo but would that give a clue as to the origin.

Steve

Hi Steve,
You are correct, the iron is embossed, have not had time to look at it properly yet but usually not much help as the iron can be from anywhere.
I wll post some better pics soon.
Regards,
Martin

Martin ,I have seen a few planes in my time but never one that looked remotely like that , you might have one of those prizes that you see on the antiques roadshow, well you can live in hope

Looking through the Garrett Hack book the only one I see which has a similar sweep on the side is the Bailey Victor. Though none of the pics show the frog, and the sweep is not as pronounced as yours. I'm sure somebody will stumble upon something eventually.

****, the Record Imp is well worth that - they weren't cheap, even in the old days.

Very much a "premium" handy man vice, if that's not a contradiction in terms.

edit; on Ebay item 260085658636 (a Record Imp vise in good nick) went for 22.51 + 5.50 postage..

BugBear (who's bought "some" in the past)

BB,
Yes, the little vice is a keeper, needed one for a while now and the later ones are rubbish, I love the little anvil thingy and the tube/rod bender thingy. 8)
Any thoughts on the plane? Got me a bit stumped this one.
The numbers on the lever cap appear to be "No 7855"
Rear tote seems to be definitely wrong.
Regards,
Martin

Hmm... From FTJ
OP-18. PATENT NO. 7855 bench plane. English. The frog has a hook that comes up through the cap and holds the cap in place. Japanning 50%. Wood OK. Good $95.00
I'm inclined to think if Clarence Blanchard doesn't know more than that then we're stuffed. Of course Preston were always keen on four digit plane numbers. :-k

Cheers, Alf

I found this in an Aussie auction. Description is for a British smoother:

Melhuish's Plane Pat No 7855 c 1885

Maybe another clue. I think the description about the frog is dead on though.

Alf,
Many thanks for that; sure looks like the baby!
I had not come across that reference before the guy has some nice stuff 8)

Be nice if it was a Preston, I'm going to try a UV scan on the iron to see if it shows up anything, just for fun.
Thanks again,
Martin

I just copied what was there, I didn't include the link, and i probably couldn't remember how I got to it.

I did a quick search on Melhuish to see what turned up. I think they were a retailer of some sort over on your side of the pond. Perhaps someone has a catalog from them.
