. . . left after cross cutting a piece of wood with a saw. Is there a more technical term?

Think its called tear out :?:

best way to avoid ( my opinion , not gospel ) is to cut the timber with a Stanley / sharp knife prior to cutting with the saw
Then saw the waste side of the cut

worked for me :D

Hi,

Tearout is roughness left when plaining either by hand or machine.

Lay down a piece of masking tape and saw thru...thats one way
Put down a straight edge and cut along edge with razor knife
Nice sharp plywood blade
