Why not take an old spade bit and grind the sides into a taper? If it works for you, I claim the beer! Do I have to collect it?

looking at a typical chair tenon tenon size of 3/4" and for the strecher 1/2" these sizes allow for maximum flexiblity re; joints and uses ie; chairs & shaves.
