Talk about posh! Makes my old kettle look positively down market.....

Scrit

The wine cellar under my workshop keeps the wines at a constant temperature and the walk in chiller room is fine for the odd nibble of pate de fois or Sevruga, but to save the long trek a small refrigerator suffices to keep the whites chilled and the crudites fresh a wine chiller would not keep the foodstuffs or milk at an optimum temperature. :)

Dom

I've got a beer fridge in my workshop (in the bar side) it's great to keep your beer and drinks ice cold but not so good for food/chocolate...

At the risk of sounding (can't think of the word)...

CO2 emissions spring to mind when I think about these sort of things. I'm no saint where energy consumption is concerned, however, I have started to question myself more and more of late.

Given that drinks generally don't need to be chilled until they are to be drunk, I wonder whether there is a way of powering a speed chiller using the energy from operating other machinery in the workshop? (i.e. you start work, the beer starts to chill. The harder and longer you work, the more chilled your beer).

Just a thought...

climate change is gonna happen regardless, a couple of dudes using a fridge in the shed will make diddly squat difference - in my humble opinion.

However, if the population of china become wealthy enough to all have fridges, then were up the river without a paddle.

I think we all being somewhat brainwashed and brow-beaten by the whole green issue, especially considering as a population we only contribute to approximately 2% of the worlds Co2 emissions.

Oh, and I always leave my TV on standby - and my computers.. oops!

Interesting stat - can you verify its accuracy? Also, do you mean the UK as a population or human beings as a population?

Genuinely interested as I am keen to dig deeper and understand first-hand rather than regret being brainwashed and brow-beaten either way.

Or are you just being deliberately edgy and controversial?

Cheers

Look out for Despatches on Channel 4 next week then

Could have swore Scrit would have made a comment about tools and alchohol
:-k My initial thoughts as well. I like a beer or 4 and a packet of nibbles same as anyone else, but booze and nasty sharp spinny things don't make good bed mates, so it's T only in 'shop time - Rob

Those were my thoughts exactly Rob. I never touch a drop of alchohol when I am working, as you say too many sharp spinning things. Now afterwards a cool beer goes down a real treat! :D

Thanks all - my dilemma has been assuaged! mini-fridge it is and thanks to Dom it will be filled with Taittinger Brut Reserve and not White Lightning and also oysters and a drop of Beluga instead of Dairylea Dunkers! Must dash, the butlers just landed with the supplies!  Totally agree by the way that booze an tools don't make good bed companions!

Hi Matt,

Here's a quote to ratify my claim:

"Britain is responsible for around 2.3 percent of global carbon dioxide emissions from fossil fuel combustion, despite making up less than 1 percent of world population."

You can find that particular quote on this site: http://news.mongabay.com/2007/0313-uk.html

But if you dig around, you'll find this is an officially recognised statistic.

The other problem with Co2 emissions is the amount of cattle that we (earth) raise, they release enormous amounts of harmful gases, as do the mega-tons of algae in the oceans. So don't believe that we are all to blame, and leaving your TV/Computers on Standby makes such little difference that it becomes a ridiculous argument.

Over the course of a year, a standby TV will cost about £5-6 per year extra.. thats a tiny amount!

I wish people wouldn't just believe everything the governments and stupid celebrities tell them without doing their own research. What we are experiencing now is cyclical, the earth for millions of years has gone into and out of an ice-age, parts of the planet become habitable, and others become uninhabitable, certain species die out, others thrive, as humans we need to learn to adapt with the changing climate, not be so egotistical to think we can change it itself.

What about making an instant beer chiller? All you need is a bottle of calor gas and some microbore pipe.
