How long did that take to happen, Paul? I am just deciding how long to leave mine for.
 
Can't recall how long it took to be honest. Think it was quite fast, six to twelve months I would guess. Depends on how wet the timber is when cut, time of year, storage conditions etc. Birch isn't very durable though so quite quick relative to other timbers.

The trick is to catch it when nicely spalted but before it goes too soft and punky. Once it gets to the right stage take it into your workshop or store and let it dry to stop the spalting process.

I just have to find time to make a nice box or something now !
