I was under the impression that a 1/2hp motor would really struggle to get through anything close to it's capacity, but I''ll be really happy to prove myself wrong.
 
a small motor will take a lot longer than a large motor to power its way through the wood. But if the blade is sharp, then it will (eventually) get there.

3 years ago when I first started using a bandsaw I was also far too impatient, trying to force the wood through. If you are working with hardwood then try cutting with just the pressure of one finger against the wood. Just enough to stop it going backwards. On certain cuts it can take several seconds to see any movement through the wood. Too much pressure and (if the blade is sharp) you get drift, or (if the blade is blunt) you get stalling.
