A bit more down to earth here's my favourite. It it was the first plane that really worked for me, and certainly the one that gets used the most. It still has the laminated handle that I made from scraps of plywood as a temporary measure but now kept out of stubbornness ..

That last one is a kit still available from http://www.stanleytoolparts.com for $US10 (and probably $6 postage). That's got to be less than the £15 the seller is asking, even after VAT. And I can't tell from the photo, but I suspect those handles are plastic.

My favorite plane is this no6 I restored and use a lot, it cuts like a razor through butter.

but in fact, the planes I always pick up are my Cliftons, the number 3 in particular, it's done wonders tonight in cleaning up some 12" wide planed Ash that was supplied to me to make a bookcase for my wife's uncle and aunt, any tearout around the knots was just swiped away with little concern for grain direction/hardness of the knots etc.
