I have been advised to open a folksy Shop what do you guys think Mal

I don't know anything about it but I hope it gets you lots of sales, if that's what you're after.

I sell through Etsy. I have a shop on Misi, another english one, but haven't sold anything there. Etsy is the biggy and has an international customer base whereas Folksy & Misi are UK based. As they all charge either 20c or 20p per item it's worth having a go.

I've often though there should be a UK based version of ETSY. This if the first I've heard of Folksy or Misi. They need a lot more promotion to be successful. Hopefully the sales will pick up and it will become a logical and successful outlet for crafts people. I encourage all artisans to use it and make to it successful.

This is the first time I have come across ETSY. Do you sell much Bodrighy? And sell much in the UK or is it mostly US interest in your products? A quick google shows most of the stuff on ETSY to be priced in $ rather than £ and some of the goods are, shall we say clearly hand made by individuals rather than top end commercial products. Sorting by price does reveal some commercial type stuff but I wonder how well it sells.

Could be a cheap way of testing the waters with items now I seem to have sorted my scrollsaw table squareness problem :-k

Nothing to loose, well not much.

The only problem with this concept is you can't pick and chose who lists things there and the general standard is rubbish then the site gets a bad reputation. All the more reason for quality producers to support it early on.

I've sold about 8 pieces in a month directly plus another 6 orders indirectly through emails from people on there who want hings like complete sets of hooks etc. Most of it is from the states and Canada with two from Australia. I get a few sales through a web site as well. Once you start selling you finsd that word of mouth kicks in.

What Tom says is valid but is true of any kind of online selling really. You need to stick at it and gain the reputation for quality. I know at least one full time turner / woodworker who uses Etsy as well as other forums to sell. Think of it as one string in a bow. It is a lot cheaper than traipsing all over the country doing craft sales and at the moment those aren't very productive anyway.
